Hello, my name is Tom. I`ve been interested in Military History since I was a kid (I`m 53). I have a few other interests as well, so I kind of go back and fourth between "hobbies". I found this site while surfing for info about my father's service (Mobile Unit Chief, 29th mobile reclamation and repair 9th Air Force). He inlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1940 and started serving in Panama. He got out in 1945. Also have some uncles that served-one that served in the 65th ID in the Phillipines, and one that was a gunner on a Catalina. As a kid, we grew up when WWll wasn`t that long ago. My parent`s friends were vets, my buddie`s parents were vets. We played army fighting the krauts or japs. My dad had a few stories about Panama, but never spoke of his combat time. I`ll be posting some questions/info in the near future. This looks to be a excellent site. Thanks, stoveupguy
those Cats made some long patrols..my Uncle was with the 45th at Anzio, then up to Munich from southern France....welcome aboard....
Welcome to this forum Tom ! What part of Ohio are you from? I ask because I live just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.
Gotcha well like I said welcome to this forum! We are glad to have you here in our own corner of the internet!
Hi Tom. Welcome to the forum. Your family sure took part in WW2. Ask any questions you might have. We'll do our best to answer them. We also look forward to any posts you choose to make.
Welcome to the Forum, Tom. We're happy to have you here. Are you sure it was the 65th ID? They were strictly ETO. Maybe it was the 6th ID or the 25th ID? They were both in the Philippines. Or maybe he was in the 63rd Infantry Regiment which was part of the 6th ID? Sounds like a research project to me!
Oops, goofed up. You`re right-my Uncle was in the 37th from Ohio. Guess my brain was in 65th Ohio from the Civil War. Thanks, stoveupguy
Not a problem, Tom. My great uncle Glenn (see below) was in the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division. Do you know with which regiment your uncle served?
I do not know what regiment my Uncle Clair served. According to my old copy of Defiance County Veterans of WWll, he served at New Georgia, Bougainville,Solomons, Luzon, Phillipines. Was awarded Bronze Star, GCM. Was told he also had a 2nd Bronze Star, and CIB.
If you would like, I can see if he is listed on the roster for the 129th Infantry. Even if he isn't on it, that would suggest that he was with either the 145th or 148th.
Always nice to see a relative of one of the Ohio Division members. Remember Hill 700! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsErxlhriPM
That would be great-I appreciate it! His name is Clair A. Easley. Also of interest, I believe Brig. Gen. Delbert Schultz (of the 37th) lived here in Defiance. Is there a good book (that doesn`t cost a fortune) about the 37th in WWll you could recommend? Thanks, Tom
I checked the roster in the 129th regimental history and did not find anyone with the last name of Easley. It's still possible he just didn't get listed, but the odds are he was in one of the other regiments. The 37th ID Assn sells a paperback edition of the 37th division history for about $40.00. You may also want to contact Mandy at the Assn to see if they have rosters for the other regiments.
