I'm trying to find out what my grandfather did in the war. He was at the invasion of Normandy beaches. I know he was a cook and a gunner in the Navy on LCI 495. Those are all the details I have. Does anyone have any information about LCI 495s role in the war?
Not much. LCI(L)-495 was commissioned on November 10, 1943. Sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, on December 24, 1943, for England via the Azores. Spent her time in England training for and participating in the D-Day invasion. More than likely, after D-Day she would have been hauling troops and supplies back and forth from England to the invasion beaches. Finally, She was transferred to the Royal Navy on November 30, 1944, and served throughout the rest of the war with the RN.

Your grandfather may be in this picture:
He is. I've got a copy of that picture. He's in the back row, third from the left.
Fold3 has lots of details on LCI(L) 495. Your grandfather's name would be a help.
Sure, his name is Walter R. Milam
My Uncle was on that boat, they were responsible for bringing Soldiers to all the beaches, they arrived at Normady, Omaha Beach, 4 hours after the Start of D Day, and from what I was told they were up 72 hours straight bringing Soldiers to all the beaches, the Caliber of their guns was not big enough to reach the Germans, so they could not fire back out of fear of hitting American Soldiers
Wayne, sorry this is a bit late, but here are 2 Muster Rolls -- 31 Mar 1944 and 30 Jun 1944 -- showing your grandfather listed among the crew of LCI(L) 495. And here is the LCI(L) 495's Report of Operations for the Normandy landings. Not very lengthy, but interesting nonetheless.
See Tommy's copy Of the Report of Operations. It seems to reflect what you have said. Do you have his name? Perhaps we can give you more information.
I see his name on the muster rolls that Tommy posted for both March and June 1944. You can read the Operations Report which gives more information.
