War Diaries 1944-1945 units that served in the Netherlands

For a number of Missing, I am still not sure if there unit was in the Netherlands in the period 1944-1945, if people have War dairies and would like to help me out it would be most welcome, it only hold specfic dates, and when possible only would like to have a copy of that particular day, for the website.

I've got the 5th East Yorkshire's diary for '44. I'd have to look back to see when they arrived. I got it to read where and when my Dad was injured. They were in the Bemmell area early Oct 44. They were pinned down and some Green Howard's waded in and rescued those left alive.

 

There are indeed 2 of the 5th EY, missing in the Bemmel area, have their WD covered

 

Have 5th Queens Own Cameron Highlanders.

 

Thanks for the offer, as far as I can check at the moment, they didn't have any MIA in the Netherlands.

 

Hi Not sure if you can help, I am trying to look for information on my Grandad as my daughter is doing a project on WW2 & thought it would be a good idea to do it on my Grandad as he was in it from early on. Doesn't help that my grandad was called John Smith we have his device number & we know he was in The Green Howard's from 20.6.40 to 31.12.41 the it says R.A 1.1.42 to 20.3.46 we know my grandad was in Holland as she spoke a lot about how much he loved the people, keep paying for different sites but to no avail at this rate my daughter is going to have anything to write! Any help would be amazing thank you.

 

The only place you can get service records is from the MOD .

Once you have them you can find out the actual units he was in & then get their war diaries.

 

Are you interested in airmen too or only ground units?

Just came across this thread. All of the 21 AG (British & Canadians) went through Holland - might be worth having a look through this link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21st_Army_Group and see if you can narrow down your search a little

A great airmen source is AB. A jansen's "Gevleugeld verleden" which mentions some of the 6500 crashes ove rthe Nehterlands, many of which in 1944-1945.

Just saw your post. How soon does the project have to be presented? The very first thing you need to do is apply for his service record here Get a copy of military service records - GOV.UK Going to cost you £30 but it is the official record and will give you all the info we need to interpret his service. Once you obtain the record (I think it's taking something like 6 weeks to get a response) get it scanned in and posted to the sister website WW2Talk.

Once his details are sorted out you will then be able to get one of the researchers at WW2Talk to get you copies of the official army war diaries from The National Archives in London. Do not order direct from the National Archives as I believe they charge around £1 per page. War Diaries can be obtained via Lee at Archive Research - Arcre or Andy on the WW2Talk site.

Don't waste your money anywhere else i.e. Forces War records etc. I personally found Forces an absolute rip off.
