This issue like a number of others has been dominated, at least in the media, by extremist on both sides. Thus when the actual policies are, as any reasonable person would expect and desire, somewhere in between (i.e. more moderate). The extreme voices, such as our wm, jump to even more wrong conclusions.

Not particularly impressed with Trump dumping his twitter rant about the supposed Obama surveillance of Trump tower on the door step of GCHQ. I suppose the fact that his team wont repeat the false allegation makes it alright then? UK says U.S. claims about spying will not be repeated

Got a laugh though from this parody of an old British childrens series called Trumpton

God like Trump didn't shake herr Merkels' hand...Trump shakes everyone's hand.
Where i live (thankfully) your handshake is your word. It can't be a good sign that The Donald never shook.
Speaks volumes here in Trumpland (Canada). trudeau has got to go.
    Merkel has already ruined Europe.
Now Turkey says there will be a religious war (like it hasn't already started-one way) and will flood Europe with even more.

Wrong G-Word Poppy...Trump is a Germaphobe, not a God - Read his book "The Art of the comeback". Did you not watch him handshaking with Abe...Trump's cringe and sickly look is priceless!
    At the 10 second mark...

Trump looks like he is going to be sick.

    Donald never shook?

    Have you seen the tape?

If you want Trump that badly, the US is willing to trade...We'll send Trump to Canada permanently, and you can give the US a dead horse or one paperclip - Either way, the US is getting the better deal.

Which is why we want Trump to go...We don't want to give him the time he needs to destroy the US.

Well, of course...The populist far right candidates, like Le Pen and Wilder, are dancing to radical Islam's tune, making the radicals job much easier in getting new recruits.

Plenty of Wilder/Pen violence/raping/riot going on (not).
So yes, i see your equivalence.
I say yes, you say no...could write a song here.
i say western countries are being targeted, and there is an organized and paid opposition (soros), to a guy trying to make a difference (Trump).
    That is all.

Never been in a NickyDs that had such small windows. And that table is way to nice for a Micky Ds. Embroidered pillows...Not at a Micky Ds.
I'm thinking Trump has never eaten "at" a Micky Ds.

Aww, and Trump eats his KFC with a knife and fork...How elitist of him...Dosen't want to get his hands dirty.

Budget Director: Trump Isn't Spending Money on Climate Change Because It's a Waste of Money
Speaking to reporters yesterday from the White House briefing room, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney was asked about the elimination of funding for climate change research in President Trump's budget. Mulvaney didn't mince words with his answer.

"Part of your answer is focusing on efficiencies and focusing on doing what we do better. As to climate change, I think the President was fairly straightforward saying we’re not spending money on that anymore," Mulvaney said. "We consider that to be a waste of your money to go out and do that. So that is a specific tie to his campaign.

Additionally, President Trump plans to cut at least 3000 positions from the Environmental Protection Agency, which the administration believes has grossly overstepped its regulatory authority in recent years.

Meanwhile, the administration is also considering pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement after reports surfaced government scientists cooked the books to convince the Obama administration to sign on. The agreement costs American taxpayers more than $500 million and was committed to without Congressional approval.

Trump advisers' space plan: To moon, Mars and beyond
The Trump administration is considering a bold and controversial vision for the U.S. space program that calls for a "rapid and affordable" return to the moon by 2020, the construction of privately operated space stations and the redirection of NASA's mission to "the large-scale economic development of space," according to internal documents obtained by POLITICO.
    [...]
The early indications are that private rocket firms like Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and their supporters have a clear upper hand in what Trump's transition advisers portrayed as a race between "Old Space" and "New Space," according to emails among key players inside the administration. Trump has met with Bezos and Musk, while tech investor Peter Thiel, a close confidant, has lobbied the president to look at using NASA to help grow the private space industry.
    [...]
"A good part of the Trump administration would like a lot more aggressive, risk-taking, competitive entrepreneurial approach to space," Gingrich said in an interview. "A smaller but still powerful faction represents Boeing and the expensive old contractors who have soaked up money with minimum results.
    [...]
"No NASA program dominated by bureaucrats could take the risks, accept the failures and create a learning curve comparable to an entrepreneurial approach," he added. "Just think of the Wright brothers’ 500 failures in five summers at $1 per failure. Ask how long NASA would have taken and how much it would have cost."
    [...]
"Turn over low-Earth orbit to commercial interests," Walker advises. "NASA — your job is to go to deep space. Get back into the business of technology developments that move us more aggressively into the exploration role again," such as a mission to Mars. "You can’t do missions of that enormity with chemical rockets."
    [...]

"NASA's new strategy will prioritize economic growth and the organic creation of new industries and private sector jobs, over 'exploration' and other esoteric activities," according to the summary of the NASA agency action plan. "Done correctly, this could create a trillion-dollar per year space economy, dominated by America."

Only goes to prove that Trump's people are just as dumb as Obama's were...

Cost the taxpayers 500 million...Oh that's a big number. Except, our national debt is 20 Trillion...which is a lot more zeroes, and the 500 million represents the proverbial "drop in the bucket." Not to mention that Trump is dumping tens of billions into the defense budget, for wars he says he has no plans on fighting.

Further, it creates the self-fulfilling proficy. Trump says that renewable energy is too costly. But, without the necessary funding, there will be no R&D, so renewable energy will remain unprofitable. Again, nuclear power was not profitable for several years, but a lot of tax dollars were dumped into it, and it eventually became profitable.

Very populist and short-sighted on Trump's part...But, then again, what part of his Presidency isn't.

Well, wm's article is ggod for some laughs at least...

The best whopper was from Newt Gingrich(beat's the hell out of me why they were quoting Newt about space, likely it is all that empty space in his head)
Uhhh, it took the Wright Brothers 500 failures and 5 summers to go 120 feet. It took NASA roughly the same number of failures, and 6 summers to go to the Moon.

I wonder...If the Wright Brothers had waited an extra summer, could the have gone to the moon as well?

At the cost of $140 billion in today's money, $10 billion per person anyone could fly to the moon.
Only governmental bureaucracy can spend money so lavishly on flag waving.

The Social Cost of Carbon Regulations
“If you could pick just one thing to reduce poverty, by far you would pick energy,” Bill Gates has said. “Access to energy is absolutely fundamental in the struggle against poverty,” World Bank VP Rachel Kyte and Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Amartya Sen agree.

The UN Development Program calls energy “central to poverty reduction.” And International Energy Agency Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol notes that “coal is raising living standards and lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.” In fact, all fossil fuels are doing so.
    [...]
But the Obama Administration and radical environmentalists despise fossil fuels and used every tactic they could devise to eliminate them. One of their most important schemes was the “social cost of carbon.”
    [...]
That means the very notion that U.S. emissions impose major climate costs is increasingly indefensible. Moreover, developing nations are burning fossil fuels and emitting carbon dioxide at many times the U.S. rate; that means even eliminating their use in America would have no effect on atmospheric CO2 levels.
    [...]
Fourth, SCC schemes likewise impute only costs to carbon dioxide emissions. However, as thousands of scientific studies verify, rising levels of this miracle molecule are “greening” the Earth – reducing deserts, and improving forests, grasslands, drought resistance, crop yields and human nutrition. No matter which government report or discount rate is used, asserted social costs of more CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere are infinitesimal compared to its estimated benefits.
    [...]
Anti-carbon rules are designed to drive energy de-carbonization and modern nation de-industrialization. Perhaps worst, their impacts fall hardest on poor, minority and blue-collar families. Those families spend proportionately three to ten times more of their incomes on energy than families earning $50,000 to $250,000 a year. They have little discretionary income and face the greatest risk of having their electricity cut off – as happened to 330,000 families during 2015 in ultra-green Germany. Worldwide, billions of people still do not have electricity – and the SCC would keep them deprived of its benefits.

Bureaucrats, activists, scientists and corporate rent-seekers certainly welcome the SCC mumbo-jumbo. They have profited the most from the countless billions that Obama regulatory agencies lavished on them every year, and from the tens of billions that Mr. Obama stashed in dozens of agencies, programs and crannies throughout the government, so they couldn’t easily be found or cut.
    [...]
Above all, they would profit massively from the $93 trillion that the Financial Stability Board’s climate task force says the world must spend in low-carbon infrastructure programs over the next 15 years, as part of the Obama-UN-FSB-Climate Crisis, Inc. plan to de-carbonize and de-industrialize the planet.

That is why the Trump Administration is challenging the SCC, climate cataclysm deception, and the bloated EPA budget behind so much of it. It’s why the House Science Committee’s Environment and Oversight Subcommittees held a hearing on the SCC, and why we and other experts will eviscerate it during the upcoming Heartland Institute 12th International Climate Conference in Washington, DC.

It’s time to rescind and defund the SCC – and replace it with honest, objective cost-benefit analyses.

Ummm...Somehow, I do not think these Chinese people are wearing surgical masks because they are in the medical field.
Nor do I think they are wearing them because of some bizarre fashion trend.

With all due respects your post illustrates perfectly what's wrong with the so called liberals and progressives, and their ideologies bordering on fanaticism. People who prioritize the welfare of squirrels and fish at the expense of people.

Thanks to that smog, more precisely the rapid and free economic growth, thanks to capitalism a half a billion Chinese were lifted out of extreme poverty in a dozen or so years.

It's a small price to pay for the right to a life in dignity for so many people, after years of genocide suffered at the hands of their own socialist government.

He has definitely gone back on campaign promises already. He slammed wall street, big bank big money types, yet put many of them in his top cabinet posts. This budget and this healthcare bill hurt many of the voters who support him, and many are too ignorant to realize it and will probably keep supporting him due to the wall and "lock her up" and nothing more. He's talking private enterprise/public government partnerships when it comes to business and infrastructure, a fascist economic notion, but it could be effective if there is accountability on both sides as long as the economic and influence power doesn't just go to the hands of a a few.

He claims the media is fake, scum, etc. Yet he is basically a partner and exploiter of Fox News and they are like a team, with their hard-right propaganda machine pounding it out day and night and him tuning it,supporting and giving "credit" to their form of media, and interviewing only with their pundits. Its Trump's ministry of propaganda.

It's all the usual bst science for hire peddled by alarmists.
Firstly, false accuracy, 31.8% is 3 significant figures, suggesting a few in a thousand diagnostic errors in establishing the cause of death. As everybody knows, from their own experience, medical diagnostic errors are much higher than that. Maybe one in ten even.
Secondly, weasel words: "could be linked" "academic research suggests", but of course not "are linked" and "academic research proves".

But it doesn't matter, it's logical and obvious smog can be deadly to people with serious respiratory diseases. Something should be done with it, gradually, without burdening the economy and the Chinese poors.
But still the obvious question is why weren't those people given oxygen or evacuated to a safe place. Were those responsible punished for that?

As Mr Gates said: access to energy is absolutely fundamental in the struggle against poverty. The only cheap energy those people had was coal, so they used it.
Nothing wrong with it. Bleeding heart tree huggers can redirect their paychecks to them if they wish, so the Chinese peasants could afford natural gas (which China doesn't have) or the (costly) solar panels. No? then stfu, and attend to your Chrysanthemum dogs. Leave others alone.
