313th Infantry regiment 79th infantry division

My mother's cousin, George William Delany, served in the 313 Infantry 79th division in WWII - he was killed on 19 Dec. 1944. I believe that he had something to do with mine detection. He was born and raised in St. Louis MO. I'm trying to find out anything I can about him and/or about those that swept for mines.

You can download a copy. Pages 147-148 cover the period around 19 Dec, 44, although there are no details to speak of.

Sgt. Delany is listed in the roster near the end of the book.

 

From other inquiries I have learned that both the Ammunition & Pioneer Platoons of the battalion Headquarters Companies (three) AND the Anti-tank Mine Platoon of the regimental Anti-tank Company (one) were involved with mine placement and removal.

Another very good website about the 313th is An Infantry Platoon Leader in Patton's Army, which contains the recollections and photos of Lt. Bryan Bell. Bell served in Company G until he was wounded and evacuated.

"When G Company landed on Utah Beach there were 189 men and 8 officers. When I had to go to the hospital, there were 59 men, most of them replacements, and one officer and he was a replacement. There were 4 of the original 42 non-coms. My 136 days as a 1st Lt. Platoon Leader were the longest any officer lasted. Some men were reluctant to serve under me, because they believed my number was up, and they didn't want to be in a leaderless platoon."

I was placed for adoption at birth and never knew anything about my birth family until I was in my 40's. In 1996 I found my birth mother and grandmother in Florida and learned my grandfather, Phillip Lofink Jr. was in the Army and killed during the Normandy invasion. Major Lofink was 1st Battalion commander, 313th Infantry 79th Division at the time of his death on July 5, 1944 in Montgarden, France.

Looking for information, photos, stories, basically anything.

I'm looking for a picture or someone who knows where I can find a picture of PFC Ervin Allmendinger. He served in the 313th regiment and he died in April 1945 near the Rhine river. He was buried at the Dutch war cemetery in Margraten. The cemetery has a project where each Memorial Day they place pictures of the deceased next to their graves to give them a face. (Home). All the graves in this cemetery are adopted by locals, who take care of the grave out of gratitude for what they did for the Netherlands. My family adopted Ervin's grave years ago. For a quite some time now I have been looking for relatives or at least a picture of him. So I'm hoping that there is someone here who has a picture or knows where to look.

Welcome to the Forums, Valerie. I found a cenotaph for PFC Allmendinger in the Halliday Cemetery in Halliday, North Dakota. From the close proximity of their graves (see coordinates referenced in their Findagrave.com memorials) I believe his parents were Rudolph Allmendinger and Lydia Allmendinger. Hopefully, there is a relative still living it that area. Someone with access to Ancestry.com may be able to take this further. Otherwise, the Dunn County Historical Society may be able to help.

 

Dunn County is the location of the Cemetery, the family was from Beulah, Mercer County, North Dakota.

According to this site, he had 2 sisters, a brother, and a wife.

Yes I have found a lot of information about him. I know that there is also a grave in Dunn County. I've been in contact with some distant family members and I know that one of his brothers is still living. But I can't seem to find a photo or get in contact with that last living brother. I'll ask the Historical Society. Thank you!

 

Good find. And interestingly, he is on the casualty list for Slope County, North Dakota:

 

Given that new info, your best bet is the Historical Society. If they can't help, try the local libraries or newspapers.

You are correct about Dunn County. Having found the 1940 Census records online, the family was living in Dunn County as of 1940. According to the census data, the family was not living there as of 1935. It is probable, but not conclusive that they moved from Beulah to Halliday Village during this time.

And just to confuse things a bit more, there is also a husband and wife named Rudolph and Lydia Allmendinger from Mercer County who are buried in Bismarck, ND. They are clearly not the same Rudolph (or Rudolf) and Lydia, but it does not help.

There is also a double grave in the Halliday Cemetery for Melvin and Alvin Allmendinger. Both were born in 1932 and died at age 12. This family sure had it's share of tragedy in 1944-45.

BTW, this is discussion may be deserving of its own thread. Perhaps a Mod should split it off.

 

An acquaintance of mine has asked if I could locate family members of soldiers who served in Company F, 313th Infantry, 79th Division, during WWII. As he was clearing out the home of his recently deceased aunt, he found unit pictures dating from some time in 1944 when his uncle served with this unit in France. So, if anyone knows of a Veteran, or surviving family member of the Veteran, who served in Company F, 313th Infantry, 79th Division, in 1944, please reply and I'll get the word to him. Thanks!

 

I'm still trying to locate family members of soldiers who served in Company F, 313th Infantry, 79th Division, during WWII.

An acquaintance of mine has found pictures of this outfit in the house of a deceased Veteran who was wounded while serving in this unit. As this Veteran has no survivors, the finder would like to give the pictures to a survivor of another Veteran who served in Company F, 313th Infantry, 79th Division, during WWII.

Greetings. It’s been some time since this was posted but I only just found it. I was researching my husband’s Uncle John Gibson, who was in Co F, 313th Infantry, 79th Division, landed at Utah Beach June 15, 1944. He was wounded in combat July 6, 1944. Then moved to a hospital in England where he died Aug. 2, 1944. I don’t recognize John in the small pictures, but interested...

he always told me that he landed on utah beach , on D-Day.. i cant not find any records to confirm this , just looking for any information regarding
