The speech in Washington, 16 April 1953, by the President of the United States and former Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, continued:

"The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Eisenhower may be deemed to have had sufficient knowledge and experience to comment usefully on such matters. All he is saying is that it is a matter of priorities. Do we think it is more worthwhile to assemble vast collections of smart and cunningly engineered weapons than to feed the hungry, or do we not?

So the statement was taken out of context.
But a political speech on the topic of international arms is one thing. Generalizing a statement from such a speech is another.
He is at least making that point but that's hardly all he was saying.
That's not the alternative that we have though is it? Indeed it's not the function of the US government for instance (or any national government for that matter) to feed the world. It is their function to defend their citizens. Now if there is little need for national defense then there are resources that are available for usage elsewhere but that's a very open problem.

Another question is how does this relate to the topic at hand? More and more it looks like you are trying to hijack this thread to use as a soap box for your own opinions. Again that's rather rude. If you want to discuss things like this feel free to create your own thread in the appropriate sub forum.

I'm in complete agreement at this point.
Haven't some in the past been given "cooler time" or even banned because of the way they reacted? It seems to me expressing an opinion is one thing. But continuing to express an opinion on a topic that has been shown to be irrelevant to the topic at hand comes close to the behavior of a troll. Hijacking a thread to expound on ones own opinions on what is and what is not moral is likewise.

One of the reasons I mentioned swords in one of the above posts. It's even clearer in their case, swords (with the exception of a few designed for hunting and perhaps in later times as decorations) are designed almost totally as weapons. Whole books (and not cheap ones) have been devoted to them, some with many "nice", indeed arguably excellent, pictures, and I've jet to see someone complain about them.
Indeed but it's their choice to do so.

A person's private reaction is their own business, while their public reaction may get them binned. That's up to admin discretion, but the level of reaction from members should be appropriate to the comments. In this case I think we spent too much effort justifying the thread itself.

This thread is totally off the rails at this point. It might just be me, but it seems a bit odd to be discussing the pros & cons of posting images of WWII weapons on a bloody WWII discussion board doesnt it?

I'm happy to say there are plenty of fantastic images of tanks. I will continue to like tank photos for as long as I live, and no one will be hurt by it.

@The Altered Beast, more nice photos of German weapons please!

In general agreement with everything but especially the part quoted above.... only I would hope he doesn't restrict himself to German equipment.

German, US, and British equipment is pretty easy to find at least decent pictures of. Finnish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, not so much and if we get into the equipment of some of the smaller powers ....

Well, the thread is called: "Some nice pics of the weapons used by Germans in WWII", so maybe other threads can be used for other weapons.

I have no idea why Coder made that comment about this thread. If we aren't posting nice photos about nice WWII weapons on a WWII site, then what the hell are we here for? If images of weapon are painful to look at there are plenty of forums on other topics. I suggest Pokemon or Filatelia sites.

I need to be brought back to earth occasionally. Thanks for pointing that out. Then the question is which sub forum to put them in as we now seem to have a wealth of relevant ones ...

The Sturmpistole looks really interesting. Totally unfamiliar with it.

The G41 is it a G41M or a G41W? My initial thought was the M but something doesn't look quite right for that ... could be my memory though.

    G41 (M)auser, of which 6,673 were produced in 1941.

Here's the more successful version, of which 40,000-145,000 were produced in 1941-1943.

If it wasn't for WWI and then lamebrain Hitler and Nazis, Germany could be the undisputed rival for the US.

In what respect? Weapon design or the whole economic-political dimension? I would argue the two wars actually stimulated weapon design overall within Germany.

Germans are awesome in many aspects. Look at their history, they have so many leading scientists, philosophers, artists... . And if you travel there you will notice that even in their remote villages they have companies with cutting-edge technology that export goods all over the world.

In the case of weapons and military aspects, Germans were among the few Barbarians that always kept the Romans at bay, after the fall of the Western Empire many Germanic tribes settled all over Europe, HRE was the European center for weapon and armor production, the British recruited many of their elite soldiers from German states, Prussia was the by-name for military prowess...

But look at them now, they can't be compared to the US at all. Vlad Putin can occupy Germany in a heartbeat. But all in all, its a good thing that the warlike Germans finally settled down.

Then there was the lamebrain Germans who voted for Hitler and the Nazis even though in Mein Kampf he stated his intentions-which he certainly tried to carry out.

I think I've clearly said that Germans were very warlike and mentioned several examples, but I'll add a few more.

Germans were so warlike that their girls preferred WIA guys or the scarface ones as a result of sword duel, then a fatal, but popular and old practice in Germany. Further more they were humiliated by the Versailles Treaty and a fish in a bathtub for ones like Hitler.

Hermann Göring, in one of his historical Nuremberg speeches, clearly talked about German characteristics and why they throw in their lots with Hitler.
