My Grandmother was invited to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on the 30th of May 2017 to meet Prince Harry. She was introduced to Prince Harry as being on Radar Watch on D Day. He said she looked very pretty and noticed her dress skirt and those two carried on some WAF/RAF banter that the Prince knew about as soon as he saw her WAF skirt, and noticed she was the only woman her group too. WWII Veterans. This was yesterday;
Thank you. We had our fun. I was touched when big men in uniform jumped to help my grandmother with the steps, and those Air Force women in the garden who doted on my Nan. We made friends, met a lot of people from the organisation who selected my grandmother, and well, when the Prince called my Nan pretty - That made my day.
A suggestion, I am very happy I taped recorded my mom, father inlaw and some other WWII veterans. They lived through interesting times, it is good to hear their voices again. Now they have digital recorders. KTK
My grandmother only served for 3 years. After the war, she took advantage of this emergency teaching scheme and became a school teacher and is a retired school teacher. Education is her passion. And well... This is my Nan doing what she loves at a local school in 2010.. Here she's teaching kids about the war. (In uniform). (The same dress her and the Prince had an in joke about the other day).
Before she joined the WAAF, she was a librarian in the Blitz. She joined when she was 17 because the country was at war and would have forced her when she was 18 so, she joined the WAAF.
