    Hi,

In my collection I have a restricted order which contains many US army abbreviations. I've succeeded with finding out what these abbreviations means for about 98%. There is only one abbreviation left and I searched the internet for hours and found soms 20 other restricted orders which contains the same abbreviation but no where I found an explanation what it means.

The abbreviation I am writing about...:

...... And WP without delay to proper sta reporting upon arrival to the CO for dy. Travel by govt motor trans is atzd. TDN. TCNT. 50-114 P 431-02A 212/50425
Auth: TWX, E-10086, Hq Com Z, European T of Opns, APO 887, dated 18 Feb 45.

What I have made of this...:

....... and will proceed without delay to proper station reporting upon arrival to the Commanding Officer for duty. Travel by government motor transport is authorized. TDN. TCNT. 50-114 P 431-02A 212/50425
Author: TWX, E-10086, headquarter Communaction Zone, European Theather of Operations, APO 887 dated 18 February 1945.

My first question: what does the first bold underlined part say (TDN. TCNT. 50-114 P 431-02A 212/50425 ), and especially what does the abbreviation TDN. TCNT. mean?

And second, I need a confirmation about my theory of the other bold underlined part: is TWX an abbreviation of the name of the author which gave this order? And what does the number E-10086 say?

    Thanks in advance

It doesn't really "say" anything, they are machine coding intructions.

TWX is Teletypewriter Exchange (AKA Telex) Service administered by AT&T and E-10086 was the Exchange Service address for Headquarters, Communications Zone, European Theater of Operations. TDN and TCNT are Telex routing instructions that define originator and recipient machine addresses, which are in the following codes 50-114P, 431-02A, and 212/50425. Think of it as instructions in an early computer machine language.

While doing some research on a relative, I came across a Travel Order which had the abbreviations/acronyms TDN and TCNT. In doing a bit of research, I found a source that suggests they may mean the following respectively: "Travel Directed Necessary", and "Transportation Corps will furnish Necessary Transportation". The former seems more likely to me than the latter, but I thought I'd pass the info along.

Both sound reasonable to me. If you can find some travel orders from a somewhat later period they may spell out the abbreviations. The abbreviations and assorted categories do change over time so a modern one might not be all that helpful. They may be available as blank forms on some sites. I did find TCN defined as Transportation Control Number so is possible that TCNT could be something like Transportation Control Number Temporary. There should also be a document (titled something like travel instructions) that defines the terms. I know I've seen something like it 20 or 30 years ago. Rich may have a definitive answer to this one though.

That could very well be. I was uncertain about the Telex routing instructions being part of the message itself. However, yes, usually the travel priorities would be included in an individual movement order.

Yep, TCNT is "Transportation Corps will provide necessary transportation." Telex codes were odd. I also find EWM was "Travel by military aircraft directed for accomplishment of Emergency War Mission".
