A California Army reservist is refused by his principal to participate in HS graduation ceremony in his dress uniform. Army reservist banned from graduation gets diploma, apology from principal
At least the principal owned up to it. Too little too late though I'm afraid. Took that kid away from walking in a special ceremony that thousands of students get to do every spring. Crappy thing to do
It's symptomatic of the "culture wars" ravaging the country. Another one" Marine fresh from boot camp denied high-school graduation walk over dress blues dispute
Does it say anywhere in the news how many graduates WERE allowed to wear their uniforms? Maybe 200 or 300 were but it wasn't news?
Yes, the media should not only report on people who are murdered, but also report on every person who is not murdered. How very astute.
That someone is allowed to exercise their rights shouldn't be news. Uniforms are pretty uniformly considered dress ware and dress uniforms the equivalent of formal wear. Unless they specified in great detail what dress was considered appropriate discriminating against military uniforms was both arbitrary and disrespectful to those who serve. If they did specify in sufficient detail that's still rather arbitrary, indeed I don't like most dress codes but understand why some exists. In this case though it's something of a travesty IMO.
The wearing of the uniform is protected by Californie law, he was legally allowed to wear it. Besides, what does it matter what is worn under the graduation robe? I'm sure that the surfer dudes wear their swim trunks and flip flops under their robes being that they are in Californie.
A high school classmate of mine made an obscene gesture as part of the senior play and was barred from attending the graduation ceremony. Years later he was asked about the incident when he applied for a job with the CIA. He got the job anyway.Never heard from him again.
The Soldier and the Marine wanted to wear their uniforms instead of the cap and gown.....this has happened before
Thanks for sharing A-58, though it's not something I enjoyed reading. A certain percentage of people will always have some level of disregard or even disdain for the military apparatus that protects them. I disagree with this sentiment, but it's a reality of living in a democracy. What I completely disagree with is when this disdain is expressed as activism against soldiers. This is exactly what this High School Principal did, and in my opinion is inexcusable. It's don't expect civilians to bend the knee before anyone who chooses military service, but please stay out out their bloody way.
Those who 'abjure' violence can do so only because others are committing violence on their behalf. George Orwell We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would harm us. Edmund Burke
Not sure of the relevance of the Gilman photo here? Was he forced to wear the cap & gown, or was he given the option?
From my Google search for facts and truth, apparently there is no protocol for the wearing of uniform or gown. Or maybe there is. You should research it and post your findings. I could be wrong. It makes no difference to me.
I asked my query to see if there was more to the story of Gilman's graduation other than his opting to wear a gown. Apparently not. The topic of the thread is that a member of the military wasn't allowed to attend his graduation because of his uniform by some activist educator. I matters not if other members of the military are accepting honorary degrees while opting to wear a graduation gown. The inclusion of this image is wholly irrelevant as it does not justify the act of the school administrator. In fact the inclusion of the photo only makes the exclusion of this student from graduation even more egregious. I'm not sure what point you are making, but if you were in any way justifying the act of the school admin, the photo is irrelevant, (see the "Not all" link in my signature for what you just did).
And that he's probably been wearing a uniform for umpteen + years, and could care less about wearing it if he has the option of not doing it. But the graduate in the original post who was denied to wear his uniform by his ingrate principal was obviously very proud of his uniform and the sacrifices made by those who wore it, and died wearing it. The ingrate principal was obviously anti-US, anti-military, anti-everything conservative since he was in the Freak State of Californyer. Just the southern part, the north and central part is fairly normal from what I read.
