Also among the cast of The Revenant. Solomon is one of those characters for the ages. So far the Dunkirk trailers look awesome. murphy's character is shown in a bad light, so maybe the motor boat captain will turn him around.
My wife just ordered our tickets for the Sunday afternoon viewing. First time I've paid full price to see a new movie in a long time. I'm really stoked to see this. I hope I'm not setting myself up. Always get excited to see a movie with Spitfires in it.
This gave me a chuckle! The USA Today review for Dunkirk complains about the lack of women and leading men of color in the film. Denzel Washington can improve most films and would make a terrific German general, and Oleg Kurylenko would make a dashing topless trawler skipper, but the director chose to go with mundane historical accuracy in his casting. I can live with that. Were any Senegalese, a term generally applied to black French colonial troops, evacuated at Dunkirk? What percentage of the French army in France were Senegalese? I have found a site that says in 1940 they were about 9% of the French army, but suspect that included troops in the colonies, not just in France. Don't know. From another site - "France sent a large portion of their colonial African soldiers to help defend the Maginot Line in May and June of 1940." What was their participation in holding the perimeter at Dunkirk?
It's possible there were some. The French forces in the perimeter were remnants of 1re and 7e Armee. 1re Armee had two "African" divisions, 2e DINA in III Corps and 5e DINA in V Corps, but most of them were lost in the attempt to breakout from the encirclement at Lille. In the DINA, two regiments were "Africans" and one was comprised from French colonists, but in reality they were pretty mixed, with both white and "African" officers and men. However, the "Africans" were actually typically Arabs and Berbers from French Morocco and Algeria and more rarely sub-Saharans.
The USA today review is typical these days. Imagine how they would treat a classic film like The Great Escape? Not a single woman, not a single minority, and *gasp* the gender roles are binary! Tells you what size type I read !! , it transferred here ? But first of 4 eye procedures done, successfully. Anything saying "The True Story" is suspect to me but it has 4.5 stars whatever that is worth.

Skipper, I always wondered about the fate of the French soldiers who defended the line around Dunkirk. . Did their survivors become regular POW's ? I have read somewhere, years ago, that many became virtual slave laborers. Any truth to that ? The lost of French citizens at Dunkirk and Normandy was tragic as well. But then think of all the citizens over Europe causes one to pause. I did not know about the Dutch but am nor surprised in the least, a country of fine character and bravery. I just finished reading the story of the 7 Dutch mayors of small towns taken away by the the Germans and their fate . I remain totally amazed that so many men survived Dunkirk, it seems impossible. I enjoyed this movie. You just have to get used to them jumping between the land, sea and air. The Stuka sounds were really grating, as I'm sure they were in real life, and the performances were believable and not over done. Plus, it comes in at 1 hour, 45 minutes, so you don't get over tired, but it moves along at a good pace.
