I have used postimage.org since I deleted all my photos off Photobucket. Even before they wanted to charge for photos, I was told by them that the iOS that I am running on this Apple iPad Pro was not compatible with them anymore and that my photos from my photo stream would not upload to Photobucket.
Photobucket has sucked for the number of years. The bloated ads kept getting worse and worse, and it would regularly hang whenever I tried to upload/view photos. Microsoft OneDrive used to be a good alternative, but about a year ago they switched to dynamic URLs which do not realistically allow for direct linking to photos. I have not experimented with any other websites as of yet, and I am very tempted to set up my own subdomain for hosting photos. I believe WW2F now allows direct upload. For WW2F content I believe that to be the best option.
You can hotlink from Google images, with theoretically unlimited storage. Passing note on this cluster-f: Grim experience fixing hundreds of images teaches me that If you intend to mend anything ruined by PB's nasty behaviour, it's worth downloading what you can (if you can) from their broken system before leaving. That way everything can be poured into one folder with the file names used during embedding. Makes life a lot easier. People have touted various fixes by changing the embed format of hotlinked images, but the ones I've seen have eventually stopped working.
Fine example of a 'Photobucketed' thread: http://ww2f.com/threads/beltring-2012.45778/ A drop in the ocean across the wider web, but illustrative. The greatest crime was no warning given at all. Overnight change with links so broken it's hard to rectify.
I used Picasa for years and never had a problem. Then it was swallowed by Google? I assume all my photos are now floating in cyber space. Tried a few times to upload from it but gave up. Now if I can't upload directly from the computer or iPhone it doesn't get posted.
I still use the Picasa desktop client as it's the best photo manager I ever encountered. Unsupported and indeed doesn't upload to photos any more, but still very useful.
Piscasa, which I use, belongs to Google, which wants you to switch to Google Photos I cannot figure it out. On Google all my photos exist but I cannot organize them now email or download them. ????
The lesson that I learned is that using a photo hosting website is not worth it. They are, simply put, shakedown scams. Once you upload your photos, they cease to belong to you. I've pretty much decided to take Biak's approach -- direct upload or nothing. These hosting sites can go pound sand for all I care.
Imgur the most common file sharing. They all quickly and easily create an account. As for me, better alternatives and you will not find.
Yep. Store photos on your hard drive - in Lightroom if you must - and then upload as necessary and convenient. Once they are stored online they are anybodies.
Fundamental misunderstanding here. Naturally, anyone 'storing' sole copies of things is asking for trouble. Anyone who did that with PB would be very foolish, and I'm guessing very few did. The problem here springs not from storage, but from hosting. A long-standing offer to host images to share across multiple platforms was withdrawn overnight with absolutely no fore-warning, along with the attachment of a price to reinstate the services that would pay for a decent personal server for a fair while. If warning had been given, personally I'd have shrugged my shoulders and knuckled down to fixing hundreds of hotlinks. I might have thought 'hohum, that was a handy system, but it's time has passed' rather than experience a deep loathing for the vandalising of thousands of blogs, websites & forums at the click of a key. I have all the images to replace. Stored in multiple formats and locations. But... If I hadn't fought my way through a collapsing PB to retrieve pics with file-names applied when uploading, then the task of repairing hundreds of pages by trying to match original titles would be near impossible. The first thread I repaired was 'The Battle & Massacre at Wormhout' over on 2T. Experiencing a bumbling tech company that can no longer even stave off spam on its own pages crayoning over a story like that did not improve my feelings towards them...
Very true. All my stuff is stored on USB sticks. The only reason they were uploaded to PB was to post on them on sites like the old version of this etc.
