Been a few articles surfacing there's a coup going down. Could this finally be the downfall for Mugabe? Sound like him making his wife vice president has kicked the militaries hornets nest. Tanks seen in Harare and state TV taken over. Will have to wait til the morning now to find out what's happening.

What a debacle...talk about playing with people's lives...Talk about useless...They make the Marcos's look competent and desirable!
Im afraid if the military takes over it will just be another grab for cash...run the place further into the dirt...the military will stop being paid, will then turn into a well armed civilian group...and further atrocities will ensue...bloody useless UN.

Mugabe is evil incarnate and I think he is on his last throes. I was in Zambia previously Northern Rhodesia when Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) was fighting for their freedom. These natives were exiled for years from their families and many died in the hope of a better life for their people. Mugabe got rid of all opposition once independence came and the greedy corrupt bastard has lived in opulence while his people can barely feed themselves nor have basic healthcare. He ordered in crates of whisky for his birthday while his people suffer. I really hope the coup goes ahead and gets rid of his equally evil wife and strings him up from the nearest tree.
Unfortunately, corruption and tribalism is the norm in Africa so I have no high hopes of a democracy as the outcome. My heart bleeds for these people and although the Western world is going through uncertain times we are hellova better off than countries like Zimbabwe.

Well good thing they got rid of those mean ole Rhodesians. That country went from exporting foodstuffs to other countries on the continent to a basket case overnight.

And about Venezuela, I still don't know what got Huggo Chavez all bent out of shape against the US. Hope they work things out down there, it sure does look bad for them these days.

I think Toki2 is right unfortunately about the outcome of the coup, it will probably only be replaced by another tyrannical and oppressive regime that lasts for decades. Africa has been really hard for many to understand (including myself) and even harder to control with the mix in cultures, religions, and histories. In many ways I think some parts of Africa would be better off with the ancient hunting and gathering system. There are some countries though that have managed to advance quite a bit, and remain at least partially functional (Ghana, Mali, Liberia).

There is a cultural problem here...as Toki eluded to theres is a tribal culture...even here in Australia Aboriginals have a habit of not allocating funds given to all people..instead keep it for themselves and their families...leaving their own people without and wondering where the bloody money went to! Its not widely reported as it does'nt fit the narrative of the government being the problem...
Education and respect for the rule of LAW is what is needed in Zimbabwe IMO...
Venezuela should be one of the richest most prosperous countries on earth...but with the wrong people in charge you get a basket case.

Still not clear this morning. Shots fired apparently in the vicinity of Mugabe's private residence. The youth party saying they will fight to the death defending him. Where have we heard that before? I couldn't believe South Africa didn't detain his wife earlier this year, let her slip over the border. Can't understand why the new WHO leader offered Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador. He should have been made to step down for his poor judgement and not consulting others at the WHO, even if he did retract his offer to Mugabe. Aye, it will just end in another dictatorship. Wasn't it called the bread basket of Africa at one time?

    It's definitely not a coup.
Generals appearing on TV to tell everyone the president is confined & it's definitely not a coup is obviously the surest sign possible that it's absolutely certainly definitely not a coup...
A not-a-coup that ouldn't happen to a more worthless and creepy shit than Mugabe, but God knows what'll replace him.
One likely contender known as 'The Crocodile'. So reassuring.

The AU's reaction, if any, interests me more should things go properly pear-shaped.

Not that I suspect they will. Smells like internal power struggle that'll end up with Z-pf still in charge just with old guard faces returned to prominence after a few shots. Doesn't it?
Not that anything's certain in a regime like that. Some right mad bastards fiercely loyal to the old man.

I am beginning to suspect that Mugabe has set this whole thing up. His wife has fled the country and her followers are being hunted down. I think she overreached herself and couldn't wait until the old git died. It is widely believed that she tried to poison him a few years ago.
