Hi, I just wondered if anyone could tell me anything about this weapon? All I can say is it's British(my Great grandfather being one of the engineers in the picture)- though I see an American guy on the right too. Thanks for any info at all, Mark
It looks to me to be at least 8" in diameter. Here's a site which lists a fair number of British naval guns. Between the dates and sizes you might be able to find some info on it. Naval Guns of the United Kingdom / Britain - NavWeaps *** edit for *** If it's this one they'd like a copy of the picture: Britain 9.2"/26 (23.4 cm) Marks I and II - NavWeaps
Looking on the navweapons site many of them link to offsite photos at: Vickers Photographic Archive exactly which photos are which gun are mentioned on the appropriate pages. The muzzle looks very thick to me so something like this might be a place to start: Russia / USSR 16"/45 (40.6 cm) Pattern 1914 - NavWeaps
Hi again, thanks for all the great replies, I have seen some faint writing on the end of the barrel, pretty sure the first word is vickers, there's also a number above it if I'm not mistaken(no103?)
Here are some pictures and an article on some guns that look at least similar to me: Dirk H.R. Spennemann, 8-inch Coastal Defense Guns Redirect Notice Redirect Notice This isn't the right one but an interesting picture (IMO): Redirect Notice
I notice in that first table there is a manufacturer called "Vickers Sons & Maxims" which seem to match the closeup of the photograph.
