New WW2 movie being filmed in Baton Rouge

The movie is about the USS Greyhound, a destroyer posted in the North Atlantic soon after the US entry into WW2. Tom Hanks plays the ship's captain. The story is based on the book, "The Good Shepherd,"by C.S. Forester.

Not much good against U-Boats I am afraid...

However, after Hollywood works her magic, she will have sunk twelve, with no damage in return.

Close, she was being used as a floating dormitory for workers in Alaska, she was taken over by the US NAvy in 1943 and put to use as a floating barracks at Puget Sound Navy Yard.

 

*SPOILER ALERT*

I have been informed by reliable sources that there's a plot twist at the end. The Greyhound ends up assigned to the Tarawa landing and is sunk by a midget submarine piloted by Hirohito's brother-in-law's cousin, but only after the Greyhound single-handedly sinks the Yamato, an I-400 class submarine on a secret mission to kill Roosevelt using poisoned teriyaki sauce, and destroys Yamamoto's transport plane. The Greyhound is sunk with the loss of all its crew save for Tom Hanks. Hanks ends up on a deserted island and spends 4 years awaiting rescue.

 

I would have said a prison ship...perhaps a coal carrier previous...looking for the side wheel!
So why has a movie been made about this maiden?

 

Well the ship above had a short life 1913-19 as far as Wiki is concerned. It sure is not a destroyer c 1943 to fit the story, there is mention of a patrol boat and there was a HMS Greyhound, a true destroyer. Maybe the USS Greyhound, 1943, is the figment of a screenwriters imagination.

Tom Hanks, who seems a wee old for the part, nevertheless has a good reputation for being in well made and pretty authentic looking films... A mystery !!!!

I guess we should not be to picky...After all, Forester's novel took place on a Mahan class destroyer in the North Atlantic in 1942. Except no Mahan class destroyer served in the Atlantic, they were all in the Pacific.

 

"All get elected to Congress", what a terrible fate for such innovation and courageous men !

 

We're thinking too hard on this, Takao, in his never ending need to prove people wrong, didn't use "Google" to the full extent. The movie is about Commander George Krause, skipper of the destroyer Keeling a fictional US Destroyer in the Atlantic. The book is a pretty good read, something along the lines of "Battle Cry".

I suspect the news critter read too much into the title of the movie. "Greyhound" as in "Greyhounds of the Sea", the semi-traditional USN generic appellation for destroyers. The names of destroyers and destroyer escorts, as we all well know, were taken from "American Naval leaders and heroes". www.navy.mil/navco/pages/ssp/reference/naming.pdf
I suspect that Hanks is smart enough to use "Keeling" as the name in the movie.

 

Well the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge that they will be filming in/on/around and such is a 1942 Fletcher class destroyer. The Kidd was named after Admiral Issac Kidd, killed at his post on the bridge of the USS Arizona in the Pearl Harbor attack It's probably one of the best restored naval vessels in the country, or so they say in the brochure. I figure that they'll mostly film in the interiors. It was painstakingly remodeled into it's 1945 appearance over the years, using pictures sent in from those (and family) who served on her back in the war.

Hopefully the movie will turn out nice.
