Came across this story today...Face Palm. Turnbull says actions of diggers who flew Nazi flag over Army vehicle 'completely unacceptable'
When people get their panties in a bunch over an 11 year old photo...It's a Slow news day Down Under.
Just spoke to a mate of mine who I thought might know something about this... CAC: Were in you Afghanistan at all? Mate: Yeah... CAC: 2007? Mate: (Squints)...Yeah... CAC: Well I saw an interesting photo today etc etc (refer to above picture) - Do you know anything about it? Mate: Yeah...I do know a little bit about it actually (smiles) - Some people have no sense of humour...(and then added)...If you're Aryan looking, and your enemy isn't...its a form of psychological warfare...Just like wearing a beard. (He was ARA - Regular Army - Special forces wear beards). If you're in uniform and wearing a beard the Afghans tend to drop their weapons when they see you coming. I pressed him no further...
1) Australian media (ABC) became aware of it in 2018, it spread quickly to other news outlets globally (BBC, Daily Telegraph, Washington Post, Israeli National News, Canadian News, RT); so it wasn't a slow news day downunder; it was probably felt it was highly inappropriate symbol for the forces of a democratic country to be fighting under, after so many of its own citizens died fighting against everything the symbol stood for. 2) Holocaust survivors and their families probably don't see the humour. Perhaps these guys would like to go to Israel and explain the humour? It was just a downright dumb arse thing to do. As in the kind of stupid, that makes single-cell organisms look intelligent.
Your opinion of course. The’dumb’ guy now owns 7 houses and earns 250k a year...my kind of dumb. Australians fought and died fighting the Nazis, the Jews do not have exclusive rights on all things ‘Nazi’...they have to explain nothing to Israel...
1) Was it really your "mate" that flew the flag? 2) Differentiate between "Stupid thing to do" and "...is stupid." Something some people apparently do find difficult to do. 3) They flew the flag, yet the best explanation your 'mate' can offer is "...beards." OK... 4) Some Australians have a habit of flying Nazi flags, I've noticed. But it is not appropriate to display one in public when representing Australia. 5) If that was the case "they have nothing to explain," it would seem the Australians have forgotten what the WW2 brouhaha was about. 6) Where was it stated that the "Jews had exclusive rights on all things 'Nazi'..." 7) It appears, that they think genocide is funny.
Ok.. No it wasn’t my mate who flew the flag...probably mates of his though, I didn’t quiz him on who it actually was... Number two...fare enough. No as I said, the explanation I got, without a bright light to his face was that it was either humourous, a joke...gallows humour soldiers are famous for...and or a form of psych warfare. The desert In War is hardly ‘in public’. 5...don’t quite understand...are you suggesting the brouhaha that was WW2 was about the Jews or the holocaust? It seems you have forgotten who was fighting to stop the regime and EVERYTHING that represented... 6. It wasn’t stated it was inferred by suggesting we can’t have our own opinions and thoughts on the Nazis without fear of upsetting people in another country..and having to apologise to them! You kidding me? 7. That’s a cheap shot...that wasn’t the message being sent. You are bridging large gaps with your own skewed interpretations...
I'm pretty sure Afghani's have idea who the Nazis were or what they did, so probably had no clue as to what that flag even represents. Not exactly the most educated country and had nothing to do with WW2. Now, there is morbid humor and all, but flying that flag has never been humorous in any situation. They can try to laugh it off and all, but thats a pretty racist thing to fly - no excuse for it. Shame on them and on Australia for feeling such a thing is acceptable to do in any situation.
Not having put my life on the line for my country, and been surrounded by people who want to kill me...I’m not going to judge them.
^^^^ Agree I strongly do not agree that wealth and possessions are a sign of intelligence. Read and of the words spoken by our president? I have a friend with an Ivy League education and makes $200 grand a year. He voted for trump because he had read the Hillary was going to make it legal to abort babies up the the age of two years old. Seriously, what is going on here shows the power of porpaganda, and helps me understand 1939 Germany.
That's quite the generalization of an entire country, yes Afghanistan has had a pretty rough go at it since the 70's, but that doesn't mean there is no education system at all. Despite the fact Afghanistan was hundreds of miles away from combat, and was relatively unaffected by the war does not mean that those living there did not hear about the Nazis or some of the happenings during the war. I can't think of a single country that does not have knowledge of WW2 or the Nazi party, simply because almost every country in the world was affected by the war in some way.
Either way, its not an appropriate thing to fly. Saying it is is like saying racism is justified during war time.
My apologies...I should have said "Globally, it was a slow news day. Because, when you think of all the ills going on in Afghanistan...or the world, for that matter. Getting righteously indignant over an 11-year old photograph is ridiculous. Huh? You mean like this "highly inappropriate symbol for the forces of a democratic country to be fighting under, after so many of its own citizens died fighting against everything the symbol stood for." Oh, wait...The US Marine Corps condoned the use of that symbol, and did so for many years
I understand what you're saying CAC, but not all wealthy people had to be intelligent to become rich. Here is a perfect example, the Kardashian's, a family who I would consider below average in the intelligence department, make their money by simply being on television to entertain people, or because they're "attractive". There are many other actors and people of that caliber that are far from Einstein's, but they make a crap ton of money for being talented and attractive.
One would think that both the USMC and Australian Military have enough battle honors won under their own banners they need not "borrow honor or glory" from such Nazi regalia. If we saw some one sporting such here in the US, or Australia I suppose, would conclude was a person that bore watching by the Police or mental health professionals. Many units sport martial or fierce 'logo's' such as the Navy's Jolly Roger's and that is fine. Using reviled imagery is just plain stupid and shows they are ignorant of their own battle history. .
Naval ensign or Army battle flag? Most non-Japanese probably could not tell the difference between the Japanese naval ensign(still in use today), and the Imperial Japanese Army battle flag(not in use). Some Japanese yacht owners have been known to fly the naval ensign on occasion. Sommetimes being a smartass, sometimes out of respect.
There is also a massive difference between the Nazi Flag, and the Japanese Imperial Rising sun flag. I have seen T-shirts and posters of the Rising sun being sold now a days, you don't really get that with the Nazi flag or emblem.
