But the US Air Force spells farce with an "O".

Yeah, the F-35 is shaping up to be a farce...The Air Force may change from O to A.

In my past experience with them it's been an "A" not an "O" for years.

My brother was 26 years in the Air Farce. Probably because nobody told him he could leave. :p

    So... seriously.
Is there a genuine case to consider this shit, beyond the memes & hilarity?
    Has anything solid been said?
    SPAAAAACE MARINES!!!!
Or deeper consideration that one day it might be a good idea to have a grasp on 'extra-planetary' warfare.
We laugh at the appeasers & unprepared nations of the 30s. Times can change surprisingly quickly.

Eg.; KB & other proper firearms nerds:
Will a normal weapon cycle in space?
(Didn't the Sovs have a 'space gun', or was it that survival pistol for use after landing in the back of beyond? )

Probably for another thread, but I've an involved acquaintance in the RAF who is superb at countering this 'F35 smells' thing.
There has been some fine rebuttals of the popular online critiques too.

Yeah, of course a regular weapon would cycle in space, though you'd probably have to counter recoil with jets or use something like a recoilless rifle. Remember, without air resistance a 'smart' projectile could hit something thousands of miles away. But, likely nearly all of this would be ground based, something like a large missile with a payload of smaller pre-programmed missiles to hit individual military satellites of the power you're at war with. Every object in orbit around the planet is known and tracked, we just have never coordinated a force to deal with all of that.

Initially it’s going to be about the legalities...a space force can bring about certain legislation to make things legal.
Iike shooting down or in some way interfering with another countries space assets. Seizing the space station and eventually allow for possible conflict on the moon or mars...legally.

Space Force sounds so lame. Seems like the nerds could have come up with some sort of better sounding name.

Wouldn't that be the job of the Space Legislature?

Nerds, dweebs and geeks are no good for that sort of thing. We need someone with a military background who gets bored at work and so has the time to post clever things on the inter-webs. I'm not sure who that might be, but that's definitely our man.

Well, Star Fleet Command is already take. Let's start a naming contest here.

In reference to Kodiak Beer's statement about the Armed Forces all having their own space farces going every which way but loose already, how about "Unified Space Command and Stuff"? Or "We Be Cosmonauts and Shit". Anything better than Space Force. That's so unimaginative, like that other zombie show, "Fear the Walking Dead". I mean really, that's the best that they could come up with?

There will come a time when we will need such a animal, but as of now no. My guess would be at some time when we have actual people 'on the ground' in places on the Moon, Mars etc. (to keep those uppity colonists in their rightful place of subservience to Mother Earth)

In my mind Matiss's efforts to streamline the current Space Command seems the right course for now, and lets be honest here the whole 'space force' idea is just so much domestic chum thrown out by the current administration to distract from its current political woes.

Let's see here...the basic idea is to create a whole new military branch, which would have to have a whole new military bureaucracy, and a whole new contingent of congressional lobbyists so as to get their "fair" share of the public dollar. This new branch would take over duties already being done by others and then invent new multi-zillion dollar projects that could very easily make the F-35 project look very cheap. Is this a good idea? Well, OF COURSE!

You should meet some of my cousins. One of them says the same thing every time an alien movie comes out. "They're gettin' us ready for the big news, I know it!" Every damn time.

Yeah I know those people too...but it kinda is anyway. Problem is that they are a rarely nice aliens in the movies...

Who knows what a space force race between countries could bring in terms of accelerated space tech...we certainly need a jump in technology for the next steps...

We cannot afford an Earth-based arms race...So, who is going to pay for a space-based one?
