I am brand new to this, but so far very confused. I have multiple veteran family members that I was given information on, but one family member in particular is very confusing to me as it states: "Joe Mickey was captured in Limburg, Prussia on 5/25/45." There is no other information regarding Joe Mickey except that it says to look in the National Archives of Veterans Services. In researching what little information that I have, I am finding that most incidents in May of 1945 were of liberation... not being captured??? Is it possible that he really could have been captured during this time when allies seemed to have been in control of this area?

Context helps. What is the source of this information? What was Joe Mickey's role in the war? What other information have you collected on him. What information source told you to "look in the National Archives of Veterans Services"? The US National Archives holds veteran's service records, but there is no office I am aware of titled that. Limburg is not in "Prussia", it is a town in the German state of Hesse and was only "Prussian" from 1866 to 1918. Victory in Europe Day was 8 May 1945, so if he was "captured" on 25 May I suspect it was by the Military Police, so he may have been a fugitive for some reason.

My grandmother had given me some papers to look through and there was a "book" that was titled "Mickey Family Veteran Database" that was put together over the years. All of the other entries mention a branch of service, what their MOS was, and so forth but this "Joe Mickey" had no other information other than stating when and where he was captured. I am even more confused now as to why it says Limburg, Prussia after your mention of it not being "Prussian" after 1918.... BUT I am so glad you mentioned he may have been a fugitive because I never would have considered that being a possibility, and maybe that is why my family had left very little information about him and what had happened. Thank you for your input and information!

Do you know where he was born? His birth year? Anything? You could check the National Archives enlistment records to see if he has an entry. NARA - AAD - Series Description - World War II Army Enlistment Records, created, 6/1/2002 - 9/30/2002, documenting the period ca. 1938 - 1946

Depending on how careful the source was it could also be that he was captured previously and the 25th of May was when he was returned to duty. I.e. liberated probably by non US forces prior to that assuming he was from the US. If you can get a copy of his enlistment records and post them here there are some on this forum that are very good at pulling details from them.
