I'm obviously new here so hello! I look forward to getting to know people as I start a hopefully long and rewarding collecting hobby.

1. Your Name and Forum Member Name: My name is Matthew. You can call me Matt if you want.
2. Age: I am 21 years of age and have been collecting coins and currency since I was maybe 8. Just recently got into collecting militaria though the items have interested me for many years.
3. Origins: I currently live in Indiana, USA.
4. Historical Interest: I am interested in all areas of WWII (and other wars). I'd say pins/medals and war documents are what interests me the most.
5. Hobbies: Aside from the aforementioned coin collecting and militaria, I collect vinyl records when I find them.
6. Miscellaneous: My favorite WWII figure is Mussolini.

Depends on what mood I'm in......
1. When I was younger (16), there was a nefarious dealer at an outdoor flea market. Really overpriced, but once in a while I'd get some good deals on Bulk, or items he didn't have time to sort. Well, he made a large purchase of Morgan Dollars (20+). Of course he pulled the cc's and S's, but one caught my eye and he let me have it for a little over spot since in the bright sunlight, it looked really rough. When I got it home, the coin appeared completely different: it was an 1878 Deep Mirror!. Not the most expensive, but one I like.
2. Medieval: I have a 1642 Thaler (I'm estimating as I haven't looked at it in a few years), which was based on our modern Dollar. Again, not expensive, but nice.
3. Ancient: An Alexander the Great (xf) larger silver piece.

Overall, I'm most proud of my Indian Head collection. It started out with a single common from my Dad, and grew with trades, and a lucky auction win, and I've been upgrading ever since. Unfortunately, the 1877 is AG, as I can never accumulate enough money to upgrade that one. lol

Very cool coins, I can see why they're your favorites! The 1877 is something I probably will never have because I can't justify spending that much money on a bad looking coin lol

The crown jewel of my collection is probably my 1000 Reis Portugese coin made in 1718. It isn't super expensive due to condition but nothing is better than gold imo

 

What is a boilermaker?

Coin-wise, I think my most prized coin is a drachma of Alexander the Great. If memory serves I purchased it during an ancient coin auction at a small local coin shop when I was in high-school. Must have been dirt cheap because the only money I had came from working part-time on the weekends for about a dollar an hour.

 

Funny story about the hobby. When I was overseas, I had the opportunity to purchase a couple of gold Byzantine pieces (Dime sized) for reasonable prices. I knew a few dealers stateside who had a few and asked a good friend of mine to acquire their coins of the period. Total outlay, would have been $600. Well, my friend told the one dealer he wished to buy all of their pieces, and if possible, provide the names of others who had more.....well, the cost per coin around the country went from $75 to almost $200 as the dealer though he was trying to "corner" the market. We never did get to make any more purchases....lol

 

Ouch. That sucks.. that's why I'm always careful about saying "I'll take all of them". I've hit some huge scores by holding back my excitement lol

Drachmas are really cool. I wanted to buy a couple a while back but never was able to find a good deal on them so I kind of gave up. Might have to start looking again now that I have a good job.

 

I almost applied there but decided on other paths. From what I could tell it's a good school.

 

I’m easy, if any comes to WV (Mason Dixon) or NE PENNA) I will definitely buy rounds, if proper notice is given, the missus and I will have a BBQ. She’s good! My cooking puts MRES to shame. Lol
