Here is a most interesting link to a weapons survey the US Army carried out in Italy in early 1944, covering the M3 SMG, the M1 carbine, the M1919A6 (all three of which were relatively new at that time) and the M4 tank. All of these weapons have been subjects of controversy, of course, and opinions of the troops about them should be good fodder for discussion here. Report of the New Weapons Board, 1944 | WeaponsMan
Technically it wasn't really a "survey", although they did compile survey data on opinions of various existing items of equipment and wishes for new equipment from the troops. It was primarily intended to introduce and familiarize senior officers with the new Ordnance, Quartermaster, and Engineer designs and equipment. After stops in Casablanca, Oran, Algiers, Trapani, and Naples in the NATO/MTO, they took the road show to England as well, from 25 February to 15 March.
