I'm looking for any military info on my friends grandfather. Ancestry. com doesn't have much. His name was Richard Chester Raliff b. 12 Mar 1924, in Virginia d. Mar 07 1986. She doesn't have his service number.

Raliff or Ratliff? There is no "Richard Charles Raliff" in Fold3, in NARA's enlistment records, or in the SS Death Index.

Can you post some of the pictures? It might help to identify his unit and other details.

The picture with his family is after he was discharged (he's wearing the ruptured duck triangle) He had three years overseas, looks like he's wearing a Theater and Good Conduct ribbons, but it's too fuzzy to tell what Theater--I'm betting the European because of it's dark color. Too far away to tell how may campaigns.
He has no Combat Infantry Badge, but can't make out what branch on his collar brass and don't see any DUI crest. The unit patch is not visible enough to even make out the shape. Leanie, do you have any pictures that show the shoulder patch on his left side?

Would really be helpful if you could locate and post a copy of his separation paper. Read through the thread in this section to get some ideas on how to go about getting a copy. "Request Copies of Military Personnel Records"

A photo that showed the shoulder patch but not his face could be helpful even though it wouldn't normally be considered a "good" photo.

All the photos of him are him looking straight ahead, they don't show his uniform very good.. his service # is 13120992. I'm just not able to find anything online. I'll have her to request his records, we found his death certificate.

Thank you all. I helped her with the form from the NARA site and included his death certificate. Now we wait. I'll report back when she gets them, hopefully it won't take a long time.
