The 48th Fighter Wing, based at RAF Lakenheath, has unveiled the first of three "heritage" aircraft to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day in June.

American crews at the base in Suffolk painted the fighter jet to look like a P-47 Thunderbolt, with chequered nose, stripes and several national insignias.

Col Will Marshall said it paid tribute to "the 48th Fighter Wing legacy".

Reading the local newspaper I came across this article written by the Grand Rapids Police Chief, Scott Johnson.
For legal reasons I'm stating this is a Public Service Announcement and does not in any way, shape or form, violate any copyright laws.

With the cold and snow, we are in a survival mode this Winter. People in the southern latitudes would be lost as there are certain seldom discussed, unwritten rules, about living here. When these rules are not followed, our officers are usually summoned.
A genuine blizzard will slow us down. Otherwise, snow is just an inconvenience until you start pushing it with your front bumper. After all, four-wheel drive is a necessity. We know that it is meant for just one thing, going through snow. Four-wheel drive won't help a bit on ice or when our vehicle starts sliding. Of course, down in the Cities, they don't understand this concept. That is why a favorite winter past time is to drive down to the Cities and count the number of SUVs upside down in the freeway medians.
The primary purpose of ice is not for drinks, but rather for drilling holes in and pulling fish up through it. To do this properly, you never want to be the first to drive out onto a frozen lake. Let someone else do it. If they don't go through, you at least have a shot at it. Every year, someone forgets this rule.
We all know that outside temperature is bearable if you just "dress for it". Yeah right. The other morning, at 6:30 a.m. , a semi tractor-trailer combination pulled out of the L&M Distribution Center onto Highway 169. The trailer dropped off the tractor blocking the two eastbound lanes. The truck driver climbed down from this rig to see what happened. An approaching car came out of the darkness with the driver unaware that the lanes were blocked. When headlights illuminated the trailer, the driver cranked his steering wheel to the right, aiming for the snowbank, precisely where the truck driver was running. The car struck the truck driver and then buried itself under the trailer. A bizarre accident. The actual temperature was minus 40 with 62 below wind chill. I think it was the coldest weather in which any of us have ever had to stand outside.
During the winter in the Northland, we seldom put our hands in our pockets while walking. We need them to block our fall. So far this winter, we have had about 20 medical emergency calls where people have slipped and fallen on icy roadways or sidewalks. One thing we learn as a small child, usually the hard way, is that we do not stick our tongue onto anything that is metal. A young girl forgot this rule over the weekend and licked a metal pipe. A frantic call brought Officer Justin Edmundson to the rescue, Seeing the girls predicament, he quickly poured his cup of coffee over the girl's tongue, saving the day.
Sometimes, people don't want to make it too obvious that they are not from the north. They try to blend in. Sometimes they do so by standing nonchalantly under a snow-covered awning or sloped roof as the temperature eases toward thawing. It soon becomes obvious that they aren't from around here. The first day of spring is 45 days away. Until then, maybe the two most important unwritten rules to remember is to always use the facilities before dawning your snowmobile suit and never kick the ice chunks off the wheel well of your car while wearing tennis shoes. Thing Spring !

The only paper work he had to file was hospital admittance. Maybe later he'll have to explain why the 5th wheel hitch latch wasn't locked. Gets so cold the grease turns to a putty consistency and it just don't go anywhere.

Has anyone seen the new cop show 'S.W.A.T' ?
I thought it was suppose to be humorous, you know, a comedy, but it seems the 80's theme music ala T J Hooker is just a diversion to throw you off. The tough guys strutting around the squad room, $300 hair-do's and constant wearing of tactical gloves whether they're leaning against a desk, walking down the hall or just looking longingly at the camera, is I guess, common everyday police work ?
The reason I ask is, the second time I sneezed Pepsi out my nose while laughing, I got one of "Those Looks".

    Don't recall the 80's version.
But I do remember sitting in my cousins bedroom in Seattle (1972?) listening to a bootleg copy of a Cheech & Chong album. We had to be sure the door was closed and the volume was turn way down or we were all going to be in real trouble. Vaguely remember a "Sister Mary something or other" ?

That was it. One of the best vacations back when I was young. Seattle in the late 60's early 70's was a true experience of cultural enlightenment. Especially for a young lad from the Midwest.

I missed the boat. Literally. After high school followed the sheeple into factory work instead of what I really wanted to do. Ah, regrets I've had a few.

In a small town in Central Illinois Patriotism survives. Every year the school honors all Veterans with an assembly where the kids get to show how much they care. Classes are suspended for the day. A meal for a few hundred friends and Family is served and several speeches are given. All branches are represented from the local area Units of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Parents who have served and those currently serving are acknowledged. There is a ceremony of setting a table for those who have gone too soon instills the sacrifices those who have gone before us. They're doing it right where I grew up.

There's a saying "You can never go Home". Maybe, but Home never leaves you.

I traveled a wee bit while on active duty.* In all that travel I was rarely out of voice range of someone who spoke English. Popular language to learn, because they wanted to come to the US. I'm of immigrant descent and I understood that. The immigrants earned their place here, or died trying.

    *I slept in 72 countries.

I decided on a career of international relations early on. I had relations in every country I could. Except Bulgaria. The mustaches were a turn off.

wine is no competition with the hoo ha pills.
we should handicap comments, like golf.
