recall hearing buildings never put 13th floor on elevator panels. while riding in mine, noticed no 13th floor. decided to look it up. the chinese say it's because the number similarly sounds like 'death'. triskaidekaphobia is blamed for our negating #13. Judas was said to be the 13th disciple. some in the early day of high rises said that the tall buildings would cast 'ominous shadows'. in 2002, OTIS said 85% of their elevators did not have a 13th floor. How nutty is that, in this day and age Thirteenth floor - Wikipedia
ABBYY FineReader, my OCR program, recently released V. 14. I had V. 12 and asked how I could have missed V. 13? The rep said they had skipped 13. I guess rationality is situational. ETA: FineReader is a very strong OCR program once you get used to its quirks. Been using it for 11 years now.
"weird because all computers are already inherently evil." - You sound 103 years old Pops... 13 is lucky for some. There are plenty of numbers which have "powers", especially in nature...my favourite number is 28. You would be surprised how often this number will appear...28 is also a perfect number...a number that if you add its factors it equals the original number e.g. factors of 28 are 1,2,4,7 and 14 (1+2=3 3+4=7 7+7=14 14+14 equals 28) Can you think of another perfect number?
number 9 there was a bar trick I once knew. take a bunch of numbers and everything eventually boiled down to 9(?) or was it 11? damn spinal tap... too old (113) to bother looking it up. numbers are so cool. had a great book (worked at a book store, free books- wink wink- they would take books to the dump which offended me) ...was it Linda Goodman?
Factors of 9 are 1,3 and 9 = NOPE! 6 or 496 would have been correct... Those bar tricks use an easy step that negates all other information...Numbers/Maths is cool...universal language...means we can talk to aliens with maths/music
My last 15 years of work was for an international company where I was on the 13th floor and we did software development for our entire company. We always got a kick when we would release anything that had a 13 attached. Sometimes it would only include a simple line of code just because of people being concerned that “something bad was going to happen”. Once we even hid a black cat in a string that had a time limit for some of our US friends who were “pilots” for a special 13 release. It would show on the screen until we connected then magically disapear. It was also interesting to see some of our internationational friends come and visit and have them come on the “13th Floor”. I guess luck is what you make it.
In honor of the Native American heritage of the leader so legend has it. In my opinion the reality could be that they did it to piss off the brass and for esprit de corps. Filthy Thirteen - Wikipedia "The 1st Demolition Section was assigned and trained as demolition saboteurs to destroy enemy targets behind the lines.[1] Inspired by Jake McNiece's leadership style, the unit had a tremendous mission focus but their blatant disregard for those aspects of military discipline that did not contribute to the mission became the bane of their officers. The unit acquired the nickname the Filthy Thirteen while living in Nissen huts in England. A demolition section consisted of thirteen enlisted men and they refused to bathe during the week in order to use their water ration for cooking game poached from the neighboring manor"
In Italian, to "hit 13" is a term for winning a prize. When I played hockey, I often wore 13 when 8 was unavailable. I found it a good omen and was considered as such by my family of Italian origin. I always felt it was lucky and was surprised to hear is was considered bad elsewhere.
Last Supper hold-over. The mystic teacher in the Harry Potter books won't sit down to Christmas dinner because that would make 13 at the table. She didn't know there were already thirteen people there.
Once sent my 12 year old son on a hotel mission to buy snacks... on the 13th floor. He came back pretty confused. .
Close. There were 12 Disciples. Judas was the the 13th person at Passover meal in the upper room, prior to the later arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Mathias was the 13th Disciple, in that he was chosen to replace Judas after he killed himself.
Take any number you want, say 11,245 Add those digits together 1+1+2+4+5=13 Subtract 13 from your original number 11,245-13=11,232 Add those digits together: 1+1+2+3+2=9 Done.
That's a "position" you're alluding to there. I have noticed buildings here in Baton Rouge and some in New Orleans that skipped the 13th floor, going from 12 to 14. Not all, but a few. I've read that the number 10 is considered unlucky in the Oriental world. Either that or it has negative connotations. My dad said that the KATUSAs assigned to his unit would say "that's number 10, or just "10" where GIs would scream FUBAR or some other colorful antecedent when the situation called for it. There is no S. Korean 10th Infantry Regiment nor a 10th Infantry Division. Couldn't really find a 10th anything in the S. Korean Army OOB from the Korean War to current day. The US 13th Abn Division didn't think it was so unlucky. I believe that it was the only US division in the ETO that wasn't committed to combat. Some might consider that lucky. However, they were slated to go do business in the PTO before we dropped the big ones over there.
isn't that kind of amazing. the Beatles had a song , at the end it kept repeating "number nine". wonder now, if that wasn't the beginning of the 'reverse speech' and satanic messages rhetoric proliferated eventually by- none other than- tipper gore. who tried to ban some music...starting to sound familiar? banning of free speech music/media/weather. what else
