This came to me in a conversation. Others may have better answers than I do. It came from member Leanie. I'm not sure if he was in WW1 or WW2.

Hope you can answer my question. My great grandfather was WWI and my mother requested his files and medals of there is any, which there should be. We finally got a letter today saying his separation document was missing due to a fire, but they want her to pay $70. We have no idea what they have. I have his service serial number, enlistment date, found 3 passenger ship lists with his name on it. We sent them a copy of his death certificate. So I have no idea why they are charging her so much. What do you normally get?

The standard NARA fee structure is rather simple: $25 for 1-5 pages; $70 for 6 or more pages. That means there are at least 6 pages. I suggested that Leanie respond to the NARA with a request for a page count and maybe a summary of what the pages contain.
