    Hey Gordon have you tried Buchanan's Master? Or Glenlivet or Clan MacGregor? If I remember, it's been many Moons ago when I bought it, the MacGregor was inexpensive so I thought "What the heck let's give this one a go. I've been working my way through the last two over the last few years. So far I prefer the Buchanan's. Like I've mentioned I'm a part-time slash "social" drinker and a bottle last me a goodly long time.

    Sampled the Woodford Reserve last night and gotta say it is good.

    Tonight is Taco Thursday at the local Lodge/restaurant. Two huge soft shell tacos and a couple Pabst's Blue Ribbons. Then this evening going to kick back with a small glass of the Woodford Reserve.
    I like the Woodford, drinking slowly it has a mellow(?) Smooth touch and then I felt like a bit of Orange finish.

    Did another 'taste test' last night with the Woodford Reserve. Like I've said before my taste buds aren't what they should be, probably due to the years of smoking = you youngsters listen up; Don't start and if you have QUIT!
    Anyway, I'm not sure just what I actually could decipher from the afterglow. I get several faint could be this or could be that flavors but it could also just be the alcohol speaking to me. It can be smooth or for lack of a better word "Velvety" or it can have a 'kick' to it. Overall I do enjoy it. The Buchanan's Master has a heavier (syrupy ?) consistency which I prefer but I'll most likely keep a bottle of Woodford in the cabinet.
    Now that I have the fixin's' for a Manhattan I think the Makers Mark is up next.

    I'd save the Woodford for sippin'. ;)

    The reality is that you get sweet (fruity) notes first from the corn, then those other flavors (harder to identify) from the wood and then a dry finish from the rye and alcohol itself. These pro tasters of wine or whiskey give you all these unlikely flavors they claim to pick up, but I doubt some of them and tend to think they are just polishing their credentials. The important thing with good whiskey (or whisky) is that when sipped you do get a separation or progression of flavors. With bourbon it goes from sweet to "woody" to dry. Bad bourbon (because it's not aged long enough) goes from sweet to chemical(ish) to alcohol burn. As long as you recognize the difference, you're good to go.

    Manhattan ! Okay it may have taken me a few decades to discover this but Dammnnn! Sitting here watching golf and daydreaming of June when we'll actually see green grass mixed up two jiggers Makers Mark, 2/3rds jigger sweet vermouth and just a couple shakes of bitters. This will be repeated many many times.

    I concur ! I usually order an Old Fashion when we're at a To-Do, like my daughter's wedding, but now I think it'll be a Manhattan. I'm sorry I only bought a 375ml bottle of Makers Mark now. Still have an ample supply of mixin whiskey though.
    I used three small ice cubes which disappeared rather quickly. Now to experiment with the mixology ;)

    I have a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red, Myers Dark Rum, Captain Morgan Spiced Rum and Jack Daniels in the cabinet in the hallway. But a problem has arisen lately. It is called the gout. In the past, if I drank too much beer or ate shrimp my one toe would swell up and the pain was quite unpleasant. I just went through a regiment of prednisone to heal that toe. I also had a few shots of whiskey in the past two weeks but no beer and this gout came back and the pills once again helped reduce the pain and swelling. I hate to think that I can’t drink anymore but perhaps if I just have a drink now and then I will be ok. We shall see.

    Lidocaine gel applied to the toe. I've used it post surgery to avoid the dreaded opioids.

    Well we had to make a quick trip into town and I was so overwrought being amongst people made an emergency stop at the liquor store on the way out. The bottle of Glenfiddich 12 year old single malt helped immensely to calm my nerves once we arrived safely back our isolation encampment. I'll see how the following sampling goes.
