Yeah, I don't hike when the wind blows. Situational awareness. Minimize the odds of bad things happening. I won't shake hands when it could kill me. One year out to a vaccine and the only treatment now is life support for 2-3 weeks ...........if you make it out of the ICU.

I was in Maricopa County, AZ. last week. If the CDC had announced that old folks shouldn't fly one day earlier than they did I'd be golfing today. Oh well. Bad timing.

Australia is ahead of the game...we mapped the genome about a month ago...working on vaccine. One case in the NT and that was a tourist...we took a cruise ship load of Australians and put them in a FIFO village just outside Darwin...and will put any further cases who don’t have a home to self isolate there also. To be sure people this is a result of a media beat up...this is no Spanish flu...check the stats, this is a minor risk for humans compared to the millions of deaths a year from a bunch of other things we take in our stride.
It’s the media that has generated a stronger concern than there needs to be the arseholes. All for ratings...so ALL for MONEY. It makes me frickin angry.
We have toilet paper shortages in shops...hurting the most vulnerable in our community. This herd mentality does more damage than anything...we make the toilet paper here in Australia...so we AREN’T going to run out. Government has announced free money $750 bucks into the accounts of pensioners and people on welfare...the thinking is that they more than any group will spend it rather than save it...this as a stimulus to prevent recession. More needs to be done and will be done down the line...
Tom Hanks brought the virus with him to Australia (bloody yanks) and he and his wife are being isolated...the problem is that he is such a great bloke, heaps of people came into contact with him...
I see this as a great opportunity to get some badly needed training and insight into a pandemic, so we can be better prepared when something truly shit starts spreading.
This virus doesn’t like the heat so Darwin should ride this out fairly well...I was trying to ignore the thing and was doing a good job up until two days ago when they announced the start of the footy season will begin, but to empty stadiums...and the whole season may be cancelled if players contract the virus...NOW I’m taking this seriously!

 

Yesterday, I felt like I was living a Stephen King novel. Walmart had ZERO toilet paper and was out of many other staples. The cleaning aisle was 90% empty. After grocery shopping in a mob of people, I loaded my truck and as I was pulling out of the parking lot, I saw a young woman driving by wearing a surgical mask....

 

I live so far out in the Arizona boonies that I don't come into contact with anyone until inevitably we must go shopping in Douglas, seventy miles away. Then it's all for nought, because we're in the crowd with everyone else. The only thing we're lacking is those small bottles of hand sanitizer. I'd like them in the cars if nowhere else, so we can use them after contacting the horde.
The weird thing is, since most people only have mild symptoms and the state labs (at this point) are only testing those with severe symptoms, nobody knows how far this thing has spread. I suspect the 'containment' strategy is a case of closing the barn door long after the horses and cows and wildebeests have fled into the landscape.
I'll keep feeding the quail and tending my growing orchard. Life goes on, until it doesn't.

As this is a WWI forum. Using the numbers from Wikipedia, I would have a better chance of surviving as a GI on D Day at Normandy than I have for surviving the virus if I get it.

Makes one a bit cautious. And helps with my WWII research to feel what they must have felt on those LSTs

 

We straddle the Irish / UK border. In the "South" country on the verge of going into "lockdown" one can see it coming, schools here are closed for 2/52 and one can see things getting tighter.
In N.Ireland this morning to do an overdue shop and one can see the panic buying, naked empty shelves, a shortage of tinned food, toilet roll, kitchen products, pasta, dried foods all gone - like "Christmas" only seven months early, store staff say there are no problems with supplies being delivered and that it is pretty much panic buying, greed and an "I'm all right Jack" attitude.
A week or two will tell the tale, not looking forward to it, nor do I feel that it will show some members of the community at their very best.

Just took a ride in the Jeep on the logging roads nearby. Homeless are outnumbered by the families camping in RV's to wait it out. This is a great time for a family camping vacation so there are some winners in this.

Well, we'll we agree it was a pretty bad day. Anyway the number is 2.88% chance of being KIA on D Day. Give or take. Depending on who's numbers you use.

How are things where you are? That was my point in starting the thread. To see what the outside was seeing. I'm in it for the duration.

there are about 7.7 Billion people in the world and less than 6000 deaths--and that's for more than 1 day

2. the mortality rate for the CVirus is for the total of those that HAVE the virus divided by deaths--not the world or country population!!!

In my little neighborhood, everybody is pretty chill (no pun intended) and going about their lives as normal. But...we've had one 'probable' case so far.

 

I'm elderly who made bad lifestyle choices. Mortality rate from CVirus is >10%. for me. To quote Rumsfeld, I'd feel safer if the known unknowns were known.

Yeah, rather than thoughts and prayers it would have been nice if they had bothered to send the tests offered by WHO from the German supplier instead of delaying to create a 'Murican test that proved defective on rollout. Of course, not testing did "keep the numbers down" just as well as keeping those people on the cruise ship did.
