How did the Japanese use poison gas at the Battle of Wuhan?

This took place on 1938 during the Sino-Japanese war in which WW2 (officially in history) hasn't begun yet so the moderators can move this post if it doesn't belong here.
According to the book Tower of Skulls: A History of the Asia-Pacific War by Richard B. Frank, the Japanese used poison gas at the Battle of Wuhan. A quote from the book ; "Next at Madang, the Japanese eschewed a frontal attack on major Chinese fortifications in favor of encirclement by 24 June. They doused the Chinese with poison gas and Madang fell on 29 June".
The book mentioned poison gas a few times but wasn't specific with how the poison gas was "doused". How was the poison gas used? By spraying it from aircraft?

 

While it is commonly known that the Japanese used poison gas in China, no known documents survived that detailed how it was used. That changed in July, 2019.

Still, not much is known about Japanese gas use, bench books only speak in very general terms.

Well, Chinese casualty numbers are always suspect. But the Tokyo War Crimes Trials listed slightly over 1,300 uses of gas, producing about 37,000 casualties, of which 2,100 were battle deaths. Data was provided by the KMT.

There were basically three ways IJA scattered poisonous gases:

- aerial bombs
- artillery grenades
- gas spraying vehicles and trailers

They also had HCN chemical glas hand grenades able to be used as vomiting grenades against tanks and bunkers.
