Hello Guys, In regards to the US Maritime Service during WW2, could anyone tell me if Apprentice Seamen were used on voyages? Thanks! James
There's no reason they wouldn't. But exactly what do you mean by "Apprentice Seaman"? "Seaman Apprentice" is a USN rank, second from the bottom in the heirarchy.
Thanks for the response. I was looking through my Dad's old documents and his Disenrollment document from the USMS showed him as an Apprentice Seaman. He joined when he turned 17 and left when he turned 18. Unfortunately that's all I have so I was just wondering if it was possible that he served on a ship during that period. From there he went on to serve in the ETO as an armored infantryman.
Sounds like he had an entry level job with the merchies and then enlisted. He may be on the roles. Start here: United States Merchant Marine - Wikipedia
