Would anyone know the Army Regulation that authorizes the Bronze Star Medal for anyone who earned the CIB during WWII? This was done in 1947 and made retroactive to December 7, 1941. Thanks

Combat Infantrymen's Association » The Combat Infantryman Badge

"In 1947, a policy was implemented that authorized the retroactive award of the Bronze Star to soldiers who had received the Combat Infantryman Badge during World War II. The basis for doing this was that the CIB was awarded only to soldiers who had borne combat duties befitting the Bronze Star Medal and also that both awards required a recommendation by the commander and a citation in orders."

Thanks Tommy. I found that also, but was hoping there was an Army Regulation that spelled it out. I'm helping a lady whose father received the CIB in the 84th ID during WWII and wants to have the VA put the BS award on his memorial. The BS is not on his separation papers because he was discharged in 46. The Archives is in deep freeze right now and thought perhaps if she showed them the AR as proof they might be persuaded.

In the link Lou provided, it does say the BSM is not automatically awarded. It has to be applied for in order for the vet to get it. If he didn't apply for the BSM, that may be a problem.

That is strange. My father was awarded a CIB. He never applied for a BS. He never knew that he was entitled to it until he bacame the Charter Commander of a VFW post and his records were requested and the BS showed up.

Perhaps what he poster in the militaria forum meant was that it wasn't automatically sent out unless the veterans records were requested. In other words, they would not proactively scour the records of millions of veterans to find out if they were awarded a CIB. They would check for it when a veterans records were requested and then send out the BSM. That does make sense.

Thanks, I did miss that. I'll pass the information along. Things at the archives are at a stand-still so I doubt they would even get an answer until they open things up--Damn virus..

    I second that sentiment.

You should not have to show them the old reg.

The current reg is Army Regulation, AR 600-8-22. The CIB - Bronze Star conversion is spelled out there.

I wasn’t able to open the link to read up on it, but does anyone know if recipients of the Combat Medical Badge were also eligible for the Bronze Star Medal as well? Just curious.

That’s good, I’m glad that they weren’t left out.
