Hi all, I have been helping mum have a tidy out and have come across a German flag, my mum said during ww2 some American soldiers were staying at my grandparents house, he was a special constable during the war and they gave him the flag as a thank you and was told it came from the battle of arnhem, its quite large 210cm by 150cm red with the white circle with the swastika, is it OK to upload a couple if photos and get some help from the group thanks
War trophy. Director of the 45th Infantry Division Museum, The Thunderbirds, was asked by a woman why they had Nazi stuff displayed. He had to explain to her that they were trophies of war that were brought here by our victorious troops and not displays to promote nazism.
BTW, flags are best stored flat in insect free cases with acid free paper on bottom and top. Direct sunlight can fade and damage the material so only brief exposure. If the flag is hung, that puts stress on the fabric and can stress it. Establish the provenance. Need someone to write a letter and have it notarized that it was left there as a thank you for the constable. Learned that stuff from a museum textile conservator.
