National Pride

.....plain and simple--again, the thing of national pride/etc being wrong/evil or instigating wrong/evil is just a myth--just like the other myths in today's MSM/etc

Well, this thread is not about those other things. It's about nationalism. If you don't think nationalism has caused needless wars and suffering, I don't know what to say.

 

It could be argued (and probably has been) that the war we are both just now pulling out of was instigated under the National pride umbrella...Was a handful of drongo dickheads flying into two buildings worth an 18 year war in the fricken desert? Some say the US masterminded this to allow an avenue into the Middle East...I’m not sure about that, but certainly acts have been perpetrated all over the world in history to rouse nationalism to allow a before impossible scenario to occur...Might Britain have sunk some ships to get the US into World War Two (if Japan hadn’t jumped in and helped us all by dragging the US into the war)...these tactics aren’t knew and work heavily on nationalism to transform a situation...

Just to blow my own credibility here, there is a fair amount of talk of a fake alien invasion to be visited upon us...the goal to get a one world, militaristic government...That’s nationalism on a global scale...

 

In a way I think the politics are a round circle. The more you go in the right you come out in the left. What separates Stalin from Hitlerr? Nothing. Both used the nationalism the wrong way.

Im from Scotland and very proud of being Scottish and a citizen of the United Kingdom.I have workmates who are Scottish Nationalists who refuse to speak to me because of the way i voted in our referendum.These are not bad guys,but the corrosive effects of our nationalist culture brooks no dissent.
I don,t know the answer to this but i feel we could all be allowed pride in our own views of nationhood.
Oh well God save the Queen(and Scotland the brave).

I know this is a delicata subject. How come Russsia took the Crimea? Like Finland took northern Norway or Sweden. Now they might be going for more. Putin said that Russia decides what their 'Red line' is. What does that mean actually??? Putin talks all the time about nationalism and making Russia bigger and stronger alone, not about being part of EU.

 

Very true.I also used to live in Belfast.Its about 2hours on the ferry from where i live now.

Read up on, say, the outbreak of WWI (one of many examples), and then tell me that nationalism has not fueled the push to wars. You can say it's a myth all you want, but history says otherwise.

1) I did not say that all wars were caused by nationalism. That is a strawman of your creation. See my first post in this thread again. I will repost it at the bottom of this post. That is the only point I have to make about nationalism.

2) You're apparently unaware of the role nationalism played in started WWI. Perhaps a more recent example might help? The Indonesian war of independence? Iran-Iraq? If you read up on those you might see my point.

3) I'm not concerned with trying to "prove" anything to you. If you're interested in my view, you can read up on those wars I have mentioned. If not, no skin off'n my nose. I don't know you from Adam's housecat and don't really care what you think.
