    Tried looking through the 25,000 Plus photos but decided this kinda-sorta showed an important area below decks.

    Last time I saw Midway she was hightailing for the horizon. I was on Reeves (CG-24) at the time. I left Reeves in the yards, ~1984.

    I was asking about the museum in Balboa Park, across the street from the old Balboa Naval Hospital. That building was the first view of "outside" I had seen for a month or so.

    Have you ever been to San Diego? If not, you need to put it on your bucket list and take the wife. Beautiful city. Lots of military stuff there and nearby you can check out.
    In the last picture across from the Midway is North Island Naval Air Station on Coronado, Island. The Carl Vinson and Abraham Lincoln aircraft carriers are homeported there, but frequently you can see others ported there. We sailed out of the Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado when I deployed on the USS Peleliu.
    In addition to the Midway, there is the San Diego Air and Space Museum. The Gaslamp District is located near the Midway and it's a large area of restaurants, bars, shops and so on that is a lot of fun to visit.
    MCAS Miramar is nearby, and you can see a bunch of MV-22 Ospreys, CH-53 Sea Stallions and F/A 18 Hornets flying about since you're a big aviation fan.

    My beloved Collingwood has the Magpie as its mascot...A nice looking bird....

    Eagles are not to be tolerated...

    The Magpies can recognise faces so its important to make friends with them in the off season...They will leave you alone...or may turn up to play...they love to play.

    Only been there once in 1987. And only as a family vacation, our daughter was nine, so the day we had set aside for San Diego was spent at Sea World. When you live in the middle of the country your vacations seem to consist of mostly driving with a little time left over for sightseeing. Did drive the 101 from San Francisco to L.A. Vividly remember the bay where the old war ships go to rust away. Another one of those times telling the wife " You try looking at History and staying in your own lane while driving 60mph " ! But I made up for it on the coast highway. California doesn't believe in Guard rails and you never know when you'll be on the inside lane or outside lane with all the switchbacks. The crashing waves and endless horizon enthralled me and intimidated me at the same time.
    I averaged about 20 from Big Sur, through Monterey and until we got closer to LA.
    I'm sorry to say, or at least admit to it, but I'm afraid I've taken my last transcontinental trek. It was worth the four and five day drives to get there before and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if things were different, or still the same. But now there's still a lot we want to see East of the Mississippi.
