Everyone is aware of the story "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift, correct? Gulliver is shipwrecked and washed ashore on the island of Lilliput, a country inhabited by little people. Due to our discussion here, I was reading a WWII era, US Army publication, AIRBORNE OPERATIONS: A German Appraisal, CMH Pub 104-13. While reading it I came across something I had never seen before, "Immediately after the Crete operation the paratroops had requested the construction of special midget tanks (Lilliputpanzer), which could be carried along on airborne operations,". I had to laugh my ass off, Lilliput? You gotta' be shidding me. Turns out they also had a Demag D II 3 half-track, pictured here.
Well ya gotta admit that was better than Houyhnhnm. It's been awhile but maybe time to dig that classic back out. Thanks
WAVES Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class Mercedes Palacios at work in the Pharmaceutical Department of U.S. Naval Hospital, San Diego, California, circa spring 1945. A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico and a certified pharmacist in civilian life, she enlisted in the Women’s Reserve in December 1944. At the time of the photograph, PhM3c Palacios was one of 1000 WAVES on duty at the San Diego Naval Hospital. At first glance she looks like she’s tending bar! I lifted this from a Facebook page called World War II in Original Colour Pictures if anyone is curious.
That's the box the explosives came in. The whole shooting match was hoisted aboard to reduce handling of go-bangs.
Mike Winklemann This just works for me on a number of levels… Echos of Gullivers travels…Astronaught (or is it a test pilot?)…and two knights from the Order of St. John…Birds in the background…
Somewhere……………………….where I would like to be. Location unknown, perhaps Treasure Island? Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum. But look to the right, is that a ship I spy on the horizon?
Cousin Matt was a pharmacist mate in the late 1960's. Proximity to the contents on the shelves did not do him any good. Great pix none the less !
I owe my life to a PH, he told me where he hid the morphine ampules. Boxes of 100. I took two when I swam out of my PBR.
