From what I’ve read, the 16 was only better than the SLR in terms of it being lighter and less kick due to it being 5.56mm.
The SLR had the edge with better range, accuracy and penetration.

Just happened to notice this. USN carriers today have 2-3 each of NATO Seasparrow (successor to BPDMS), RAM, and CIWS. This allows multiple means of engaging a target:

Seasparrow uses semi-active radar guidance, controlled by the Mark 91 director; this also has a closed-circuit TV mode. It also has the longest range of the three.

RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) is autonomous once fired; the launcher just has to be pointed in the approximate direction of the target, either by the ship's search radar or ESM. It uses passive homing, either on the target's radar emissions (against a radar-guided missile) or its infrared signature.

CIWS uses radar to direct its gatling gun for a direct hit on the target. It is completely self-contained, gun, search and fire control radars, and computer on the mount.

The Nimitz class used to carry three Seasparrow launchers, on each quarter and the starboard bow, each with two directors, and four CIWS, but the numbers have been reduced, either to save costs, make room for something else, or reduce maintenance needs (lately I've only been seeing one Mark 91 per Seasparrow). The intent appears to be to have one of each weapon able to engage a target on any bearing (the port bow is a bit tricky since weapons mounted there have to be clear of aircraft launching or boltering from the angled deck).

The Seasparrow launcher carries eight missiles and the RAM 21, after which they have to reloaded manually. CIWS carries enough ammo for several engagements, then also has to be reloaded.

BPDMS (Basic Point Defense Missile System) which Opana mentioned was our first attempt at a short-range self-defense system against the then-new cruise missile threat. It was basic indeed, controlled by a man on deck manually pointing the director at the target. It used an eight-round box launcher, bulky because the wings on the missile did not fold. I first saw it on an LPH in 1974 and was surprised to see an amphib carrying what appeared to be an ASROC launcher!

Considering humans were small mammals at the time of dinosaurs and have since evolved into humans, its entirely possible the already diverse reptiles evolved a humanoid spin-off...plenty of time to evolve and leave (underground or into space) without leaving any obvious trace...

 

The reason for posting this is because of a comment i made months ago regarding drones and duck hunters/clay pidgeon shooters...a good shot gun shooter should be with every company ready to gun down any drone getting too cosy...

 

Was driving home from work the other day and spotted F-35s coming into Darwin airport…One after the other…then a bit later not one but three Ospreys flew overhead about 500 feet in front of the car…over the highway, which is adjacent to the airport. Soo cool to see the transition of the giant engines from forward facing to straight upwards so quickly…There’s no escaping it…Americans are cool.

A very complicated design the Osprey. Development and deployment has caused the lose of numerous lives. We are a stubborn lot and can not seem to give up on ideas that have merit or involve huge investments.
