Luftwaffe version German Cross In Gold

Greetings all -

Just got back from vacation today, and am rather spent. Not much energy. But, wanted you to have something new to take a gander at. Here's a front and back shot of a cloth version of the German Cross In Gold. It is original. The backing cloth is field blue for the Luftwaffe version.

I'll get more posted on it after Stevin gets the pics up for me, and I have had time for some rest.

Excellent images gents.......now for my obvious question, this award would be worn on the ? tunic or ? and the price for an excellent itme such as this would be ?

The cloth awards were worn on every day uniforms and in the field. The heavy and often expensive medals were saved at home for (formal class A's) dress occasions.

For those of you who are not familiar with this cloth German Cross, the ring of gold is real metal with a gilt wash, and it is sewn into the cloth badge! Only something the detailed Germans would do!

Just home for lunch, so, I will simply say this. For those of you more attentive members, you might have noticed I sent the pic wrong. The 1941 date is in the wrong position! I'll have to get my son to make it display correctly if possible, or, maybe I will just leave it.

I throw this thought out amongst you experten. Ever since I posted that where placed on what uniform I took a look through my day and night fighter pilot pics and it appears at least in 1944-45 that this DK version was not much worn and if only the metal version was not available that the cloth was worn on the tunic. Seldom was it worn on the lederjacke although there are pics that exist of the receipients with the DK on the Ost front, and that being the "softer" version but also the metal

As to Fallshirm, transport, bomber, recon and all the others I cannot say, but does seem almost odd that going through quite a few and I mean quite a few DK winners pics the metal one was worn almost entirely. Were they given the cloth as well as the metal ?

I think the cloth awards were mainly "private purchase" pieces. Having their awards made in cloth and sewn to the tunic seems totally logical to me because there was nothing hanging that could get caught on anything like with all metal badges and awards.

I have seen many pics posted at another mil col site--a new site thats been around only a few months--and there was a Luftwaffe pilot with cloth pilot badge--ek1, ek1 spange, wound badge and something else. The angle the pic was taken--was where you cannot see anything on the right side of his tunic.

I see I failed to answer your question on the concerns of cost.

Depending on the branch involved, condition, etc., reflects on the price. My Army example, which I have not posted here, cost me $325 as of May 2003. This Luftwaffe example posted here, cost me $425 as of October 2002.

Neither are for sale.
