Ah yes, Turkish nationalists consider Turanism not in the way it actually is. They consider it as the unification of Turks.
So if I summerize things there would be 10% nationalists and 10% fundamentalists. That would mean that 80% of the Turks would be ready to join Europe. About other parties: Are there any small ethnic minority parties, even if they are not representative?
Thanks ofr answer Kerem I wish the French National Front scored only 10% in elections...French people should care more about the enemy within, than about Turkey Anyway, my belief on the subject is that Turkey does not belong to Europe, Middle east, Asia, or any "Muslim countries group". Turkey is a case of its own, and could join the E.C. If it could happend, I would remind all the assholes who feed themselves on religious tensions and conflicts, that people can share a goal and work together whatever their religion is. I believe the only weird thing in Turkish system is the National Security Counsil in which the Army is represented. But the fact that the Army did not interfere with the democratic victory of the AKP shows the people's vote was respected.
However that more than half of this 80 % strongly oppose any compromises like recognition of Cyprus. The leading opposing party CHP (leftist) is acting like a extremely nationalist party in order to gain votes from the rising nationalism in Turkey. That is why E.U. membership talks are partially blocked. E.U. should understand that Turkey will not accept any of these insists. And we have dilemma. The graetest minorty in Turkey is Kurds and you know what has been going on about them. There are many kurdish members of parliament in both AKP and CHP. But there is also Democratic Society Party which openly supports seperatist PKK, their party could not pass the 10 % limit, in fact that limit is being kept valid only to keep them out of the assembly. There are other minorities off cousre but they seem to be doing fine. There are Syriacs, Armenians, Jews ... They don't have a party as far as know. And there is the Alevi Muslims. It is claimed that there are more than 10 million Alevis in Turkey, however State recognizes them as Sunni muslims thus they don't get any funds to build Cem Evi (Alevi Mosque) or hire Clerics. But Alevis are not seperatist. They are Turks and have many members in the parliament. They don't make much noise as they have formed their own community to make their beliefs survive.
And still Army is the most trusted establishment among Turkish people. The new chief of general Turkish staff Yasar Büyükanit is more agressive than his predeccor. In his press confrences he critizes the government for not being loyal to laicism, and people like that attitude. AKP got about 35 % in the last elections, and probably get 25 % in the upcoming elections because people started to think that AKP is causing trouble in the country. Some people compare Tayyip Erdogan to Adnan Menderes who was executed by hanging after a military coup in 1961. Off course that is not likely to happen again. Anyways; Army is on a good way for not interefing politics, but there is a long way to go. I couln't agree more.
Tell us more about Cyprus. Is the Cyprus issue a matter of principle or is it a territorial claim? I know the Turcs from Cyprus wanted to join the Eu but the Greek part of the island woud not let them. Does Turkey want the Kibris Republic to be Recognised as well ? What are Turkey's conditions (if there are any)?
I have learned alot in the last few posts ! How do the Turkish people feel about American military posts being on their soil ?
For now Turkey just wants the isolations on Northern Cyprus to be removed. There is an embargo going on. If isolations are to be removed, Turkey will open its harbors and airports for the Cypriot. That is the issue with the E.U. right now. But recognition of Cyprus is not likely to happen unless the island is united. On the long term Turkey would support the unification of the island, (Greeks refused that before) if that is not possible Turkey will try for the recognition of the Turkish side of the island. Cyprus has a big strategical importance for Turkey. If we did not interfere in 1974, it would be a greek island by now. There are 36000 Turkish troops in Cyprus, and it looks like they are to stay there for a decade or more.
TA, as in every country we have communists and globalization opposers, they hate the fact that there are American soldiers in Turkey. One of them was famous Deniz Gezmis who was sentenced to death for violating Turkish Criminal Code's 146th article, "to attempt to overthrow the Constitutional order" in 1971. Islamic fundementalist as you would reckon don't like yanks either. Most of Turkish people consider having American soldiers in Turkey in a realistic manner that we should be allies with the U.S. in order to secure our country in economic and military terms. However lately questions raised when PKK attacks gained momentum. Turkish government wants the U.S. start military offense in northern Iraq against PKK. But U.S. seems involuntary. But I am sure that Turkey will stay as an ally of America for a very long time.
I went to Cyprus in 2004. I was surprised when I noticed that the British are buying all the coastal houses in the Turkish zone whereas most tourists from other countries stick to the Greek side. One man told me that these places where the last villas available in the Mediteranean for modest budgets and that the Turks are gettign concerned because the whole coast + farmlands are being sold by farmers who are paid an amount which is a fortune compared to their daily wage.
Joining to Eu is just a big lie for Turkey and it will never happen now and in future too. To be honest we are still not complety for this organization, Its true. But i still dont understand how they accepted bulgaria or romania as new members? Their economic and social situations are not better than Turkey. So People in Turkey think EU doesnt want Turkey as a new member coz of our nationality and religion? I remember that sarkozy said this organization is a christian organization. So i dont understand that why do our government try for join the Eu? About Cyprus. Cyprus Turkish live as in a prison in spite of accepted to annan plan. Everythings simple and clear as i wrote. Thats it
It will never happen, as i said you before Eu wont accept to Turkey as a new member, so it looks impossible in nearest future.
