Well, i guess thats what happens when your controled from another country. And maybe thats why many English have a problem telling the difference between England and Britain. But then again, is there any difference. Wasn't ancient Briton actually what we now call England. P.S. If you want it to change Gordon, all you havre to do is elect the SNP and get your independence. It'll get my vote.
Bish, a) I'm a Tory (surprise, surprise! ). I also worked in local government long enough to have a very low opinion of the SNP. b)We've all supposedly been part of the same state for 300 years-which is why some of us get annoyed at blatant English nationalism. c)Academics use the term 'British' to refer to the pre-Roman Celtic inhabitants of the British Isles. 'Welsh' comes from Walas, an Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'Romanised Foreigner'; in other words, the Romano-British population who were here when the Angles, Saxons and Jutes started arriving in the 5th/6th centuries and settled. So there's an argument to be made that the Scots and Welsh are technically( ) more British than the English ever will be. But you might have trouble proving that one down the pub without finding yourself in a fight....
And thats why you see Union Jacks when it should be the George Cross. Any show of englishness is put down as nationalism. Unlike the Scots Welsh and Irish, we ain't allowed to be proud to be English. Thats why so many here get confused. Our national Identity was stripped from us, and only now is it coming back. Ok, so the ones who run things in this country see anthing English as British. As for who the Britions really are, i think i would agree with yyou there. I don't see the English as decendents of the acient Britons, but as Anglo-Saxon. In other words, we're German. Maybe that explains why we force our stuff on you.
Well, As I said earlier, the country's called Great Britain, not Greater England, which is why the St Georges' Cross isn't the national flag. The Union flag has the English, Scottish & Irish flags incorporated into it, which is why the rest of us get annoyed at it being portrayed as the 'English' flag. No-one said the English weren't allowed to be English; they just need to be able to tell the difference between Britain and England. I just read a quote from a guy from Tiverton, who travelled to London for the parade. According to him, England winning the Ashes was great for Britain, brought back 'our' pride, and might even result in 'our' national team winning the World Cup! I didn't know Britain had a national football team, and that's exactly the point I keep making.
No, neither did i. And believe me, its pisses me off as much as you to see English achievments credited to the rest of Britain.
Tried to get hold of this guy to ask what he thought, but he was a bit busy ; - http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/STUcumberlandP.JPG
Your pissed off ??? Imagine how the Welsh feel about the fact that everyone is claiming England won the Ashes, when it was the team of the England and Wales Cricketing Board which won !!!!!!
Probably hiding from the vengeful spirits of Jacobites, Martin! Think Freddie was right about the 'British civil war' erupting here......
Yes, and now the King will have to send troops to Ireland and Scotland to restore the Catholic line of the Stuarts and crush those damned English once and for all!
And there was me thinking it was the English Cricket team that won it, not the English and Welsh cricket board. Does Wales actually have a cricket team.

[/QB] </font>[/QUOTE]The so-called 'English' team is the team of the England and Wales cricket board, and no they don't have their own team. ps, One of the stars of the team, the bowler Simon Jones who was injured for the last test is Welsh. According to this, Redcoat's actually right. So back to the recurring point...if it's the England & Wales Cricket Board, why do we never hear about anything but the English component, and why use England's Three Lions logo, when the Union Flag would have been more appropriate?
But if you notice, though it says England and Wales Cricket board, on the logo, it just says ECB. I guess its like football, its classed as the English Football league, but there are welsh teams in it. If you look at the FA sight, it has the England badge and says the home of English football. But, i guess because Wales has its own national team, they have there own FA to. And no, the Union Flag would not be appropiate. That represents Scotland and Ulster as well. Guess Wales should get there own national team.
It represents Scotland and Ireland, since Ulster wasn't a separate province at Union in 1800. Or maybe the 'England & Wales Cricket Board' should design a logo which actually represents England AND Wales?
ZZZzzzzzzzz..... ( Sudden thought : There's only one thing more boring than this thread - cricket ! )
