Following its neighbors, NY and Conn., NJ passed legislation banning smoking in most public areas - including virutally all bars and restaurants. Of course, the Atlantic City casinos got an exemption. The true way US politics work = money talks ... Next up ... ban on sex in public places - how dare they impinge on my constitutional rights!
Don't count on it Any idea how things are going in Ireland with their smoking ban? - Didn't Italy do something similar recently?
The UK is about to follow suit, but as usual the People's Republic of Scotland has to go one better. Several local authorities in Scotland are already talking about making the ban (on smoking in enclosed public places ) apply to public parks. The logic? To "protect children". Yes, it escapes me too...........
Public parks? Wha? You evil smokers - treated like drug dealers - what's next? No smoking within 1000 feet of a school? The "Smoke Free" school zone!
I actually agree with the smoking bans. Lets face it, that smoke will follow you. I know many times when i sit in non-smoking areas, the smoke is still in my face. I have asthma and when it flairs up its hard enough to breathe on my own let alone with smoke in my lungs.
Ireland? After the initial grumbling people came to understand that actually the ban was a good thing as there was one thing less to interfere with the boozing. Besides the beer is better as the bartenders stopped coughing they don't shake it any more.
I'm not a smoker either and, frankly, I enjoy a smoke-free environment. However, I believe that the transparency of the law, which allows for a ridiculous exemption for Casinos, erodes the legitimacy of it. If the true reason is public health - there should be no exceptions.
Well, I don't smoke cigarettes, I don't hunt foxes, I don't possess live handguns... But if, next time around, any political party has 'banning Governments from banning things' on it's manifesto.... They get my vote !
Being an ex-smoker- I'm all for it. Unless its the middle of a blizzard or typhoon, how hard is it to go outside the door of the bar and grab a smoke? And since smoke interferes with smell- which interferes with taste- which in turn interferes with the taste of my beer- Actually- my wife and I went to Ireland a last year, and suffice it to say, we went to a couple pubs. A few times. Before midnight, during the "official" pub hours- no smoking. But as soon as midnight rolled around, the pubs in the small towns anyway started their "shut-in" hours- no one else could come in the pub, but the people already in there could stay until the tender closed the pub. And believe me- the INSTANT those "official" hours ended, just about EVERYONE in the pub lit up. OK, and i did bum a couple, but I blame that on the Guinness...
Here's the latest scaremongering... Human Rights fears over smoking ban Goebbels would be proud of this lot-or maybe that's who the control freaks are trying to emulate. It's strange that "human rights" don't seem to include the public's right to live with a minimum of state interference for the sake of it, or to be able to make their own minds up. [ 11. Sorry for dragging up a dead topic, but here's proof of exactly how stupid (and pointless) The People's Republic of Scotland's latest attempt at playing Big Brother really is: Smoking ban for bus shelters
Attention all smokers in the UK more dumb news on the radio I heard our M.P's want to raise the age of smoking from 18 to 21
I never smoked and never wanted too. Unfortunately it's too entrenched in society to do away with all at once. What we are seeing here are the baby steps towards a smoke free society. In my opinion, good riddance!
Just for the record I am a non-smoker the problem here is this could start to affect other maters like Alcohol drinking well we shall all see how this plans out
Richard's right..it's already started spiralling out of control. Fortunately this attempt was nipped in the bud.
