The government's ID cards scheme has suffered three defeats in the Lords. Peers voted to block the scheme until full costs were known, but ministers say its cost cannot be revealed as it will make it hard to get a good deal.

what I have herd on this matter we will all have to pay £200 for this ID Card no thank you this has only come around because of are involvement in the Middle East thanks to our useless Prime Minister who lied to us and how exactly is a ID Card going to stop terrorises?

In spite of this, the government said it would press ahead with the scheme and is likely to try to overturn the defeats when the Bill returns to the Commons.

This is true the current Labour Party will push this through and make it law and before you think I know I leave my card at home don’t try it this Government is giving local councils sweeping powers against you and don’t forget we now live in a police state as from the start of the year here in the UK.

The age of Big Brother is here so much for freedom. [IMG]

I support the idea of cards, but not at £200 a go obviously. In my old job, I had to publicly display photographic ID 8 hours a day, and now I'm a student I've got another ID card, which I'm required to carry to even get in the library! I've also got one of the new photographic driving licences, but I don't carry it since I got my university card.
The cards, if properly set up, would drastically cut down identity theft for fraudulent purposes, and fraud generally. Thatcher discussed these cards 20 years ago, and Blair was one of the Looney Left who threw up his hands in horror and whinged about 'civil liberties'; what a difference having a captive audience makes. The Iraq war is a convenient sop, the idea of ID cards tends to get floated about once a decade.
I'm more worried about what the Nanny state will ban next; since the smoking ban was finalised in Scotland, there's been a non-stop barrage of media propaganda against drinking, eating the 'wrong' food, not eating enough of the 'right' food, not taking enough exercise etc etc etc. Some Health authorities have even issued 'diktats' that anyone expecting a visit from a health worker MUST ( no 'please' or 'could you'!) stop smoking at least an hour before the appointment, or take the consequences. ID cards are the least of my worries.

Since last year everybod in Holland needs to be able to ID themselves to police, etc. when asked. Not a special new card; a driver's license or passport will do. Of course there was a huge outcry against this in the beginning; violation of, indeed, civil liberties, etc. The idea was to give the police more opportunity to counter ID fruad, like Historian wrote, but also because it just saves them a damn lot of time, because now they don't necissarily have to take people to the station to have their ID checked first.

I honestly can't be bothered. I don't see the 'civil liberty' problems that some people do.

Interesting comments but what about the long term we all know we will get sloppy with our ID cards leave around loose them so the next logical step is on its way and right now being tested the RFID (Radio Frequency ID) a small micro chip will be inserted in to your hand that suggests the state owns you! That means you can be bought or sold by the state and that’s the end of your freedom.

As mention the NANNY STATE we got here in the UK this has coursed more harm to the UK than anything else and it will only get worst why even now people are going around sleep walking but not all of us thankfully I just wish these people wake up to what’s going on in the UK.

A bit unlikely! And anyway, they can already pinpoint everyone's location by locking into the signal from the IF on your mobile. ;) I believe it's standard procedure when looking for a missing person.

Hello Gordon all this is happening now but in a sly way granted at the moment you still have some freedom but in 10 years how much freedom will we have left are civil rights are being eroded by those people who are up to no good just watch the nanny state.

    You said it yourself

Look at the power they got! Coming out with this harmful trash no one seems to know who they are?

    Regards,
    Richard

I am somewhat amused at this revulsion for an identity card. Over here I am carrying my ID since I am 10 (which means a loooong time) and quite frankly I don't feel in the least oppressed.

I vote for parliament every 4 years, for the president of the republic every 5, for local council every 4 again. I have never had the time for that, but two of my sisters are involved on the current presidential election, one is on a candidate's commitee, the other will be chairing a voting site.

With my ID I can prove to any authority that I am myself, and not another guy with the same name. Better yet, nobody can make any false pretences using my name! No need to bugger around with power bills or whatever, in Ireland I have a phone line on my name so now my phone bill does as a certificate of residence. Oh, when applying for a phone line I wasn't asked for any ID, so I could have stated my name as Mikhail Gorbachev [IMG]

Well, there's a few problems with that quote:
    1) It might have been true 230 years ago, but the world was a damn sight more naive then.
2)The argument about 'prizing God's rights' is (mis)used by religious fundamentalists of every persuasion now.
    3) The 'nanny-state' mentality in Britain all stems from people who consider themselves 'well-informed', so not being enslaved apparently means making everyone else toe your line.
That said, I'm still in favour of a properly set up and maintained ID card system...that doesn't cost a week's wages.

Personally i don't see wot the problem is. Most of us, at least those that drive, carry photo ID anyway. Being in the Army, i carry 2 sets of photo ID. With an ID card for everyone, there will be no excuse for shop keepers to sell beer to those under age as well as helping to make some crimes much harder to commit.

As a last word we are living in a world controlled by people who are up to no good, I have pointed out the weakness in the ID card and what will replace the card the RFID fitted under your skin and that is tagging and control.

The world leaders are calling for a new world order that means control, don't loose your freedom to them ok it may take 10 years or 100 years, but the foundations have been laid here and now.

First they came for the Jews and communists and I said nothing, then they came for my neighbours and friends and still I said nothing, then they came for me and no one was left to say anything for me.

Going around with your eyes closed is a bad move.

The Global Biodiversity Assessment calls for human population to be reduced from 5.6 billion to 1 to 2 billion (Reference GBA Section 9.2.3.2)
Source United Nations Documents have a think about that one.

Read what the U.N is up to read there own Documents?

I am not interested in crack pot sites only facts.

Don't worry son, they believe in you.

Excellent! All we need now is a few volunteers. Care to start a trend?
