I really love these middle-aged politicians who admit to spending their youth boozing, smoking, partying etc and then turn around, wagging their finger and saying 'Ooooh...you shouldn't do that ...' [IMG]

At the last count 61% of the British population wanted to leave the United Kingdom if they had the money to get out. Not surprising one of the reasons is this ridicules nanny state we live in keeps coming up with more stupid ideas. And they say it’s for improving are way of life well excuse me for speaking out. I am sick of these people and their harmful thinking. They are the ones who are causing problems.

Nearly every week you hear about these people throwing their weight around and laying down their law who the hell do they think they are. I believe a democracy and freedom of speech. But the way things are going here it’s more like a 21st century Bastille why don’t they just lock us all up and be done with it. This political madness has gone too far and I am bloody sick to the back teeth of it.

I'm curious Richard. Did whoever counted these 61% ask them where in the world they would go?

    Za,
It doesn't work like that in Scotland, unfortunately. A vast percentage of the population seem to think it's either illegal or morally reprehensible to vote for anyone but a Left-wing party.
There used to be a joke that Scottish Labour could field a Chimpanzee as a candidate and still win an election. No-one jokes about it anymore, since Labour keep getting re-elected regardless to how many times they kick the public in the teeth. The Scottish 'Parliament' is just the latest example.
    JP,
I'm one of the 61%. Might win the lottery and buy an island in the Carribbean! :D

All right, Gordon, blame it on the Opposition if they are incompetents and can't attract voters. Otherwise, what you get is what the majority wants: democracy by definition.

If you're not satisfied there are two things you can do:
    a) keep on ranting here, to a limited audience;
    b) join the least incompetent opposition party (preferably one of active smokers) and do something useful about the status quo.

Fair point. The grass is always greener....

Where indeed ? Australia ? Too hot. France ? No way ! New Zealand ? Miles from anywhere. Canada ? Too cold. Finland ? Ditto. The USA ? Someone wakes up with a headache and shoots me as he drives by ... Scotland ? Full of drunks and loonies....

I actually did that when I joined the Tory party in 1979, who then went on to govern for 18 years!
But even at their height, the Tories were never in the majority in Scotland. It's not so much that they're incompetent (no worse than anyone else really), there was such an ideological lurch to the left in Scotland in the 70s that even the industrial strife that led to Thatcher being elected had little impact on voting habits up here. If anything, it reinforced them; all the de-industrialisation and polar shifts in society's fabric were her fault, apparently. You still get Scots standing in pubs ranting about Thatcher SIXTEEN YEARS after she left office, and NINE YEARS after the Tories were last in power; that's the level of brainwashing we're talking about. [IMG]
The Scottish Parliament is a coalition between Labour and the Liberal Democrats, with the Scottish Nationalists third. If I remember, the Scottish Socialist Party were fourth, leaving the Tories trailing.
SO sorry, but I don't have many other options besides ranting in here to you guys! [IMG]

Good point jp as I remember that point was not part of the question. These sorts of questions pop up in newspapers from time to time. If I see a new one I shall take part and put that question to them.

You can always emigrate, but where to?

Most of South America is turning Left or what passes by left there. Africa maybe but dictatorships there are too unsophisticated to merit the title of right or left so bad luck there too. Quite frankly the only place I see is Bielorussia, you'll just have to pray there is not yet another orange revolution. But I expect beer is awful there. [IMG]

Well, as an European emigré myself (along almost all my family, who's a horrible mixture of many too-European nationalities)... I could tell you that Latin America is, at least until now (except for Venezuela, Bolivia and Cuba) a very good choice. Free market, democracies and a State too incompetent to be even its own Nanny. [IMG]

Brazil and Chile are both ruled by modern and intelligent Left parties, so they're both a very good option. The left in Argentina is neither intelligent nor radical, but quite incompetent, as far as I can see due to the overwhelming invasion of Argentines Mexico's facing (and that's not good! Argentines are the very much loved French of Latin America!) :D [IMG]

Costa Rica is nice, and so is Colombia (the drug-guerrilla problem is slowly but steadily being controlled by one of the only two right-wing régime of the whole region). Mexico has changed a lot for good (under a centre-right party) these last 6 years and I live very happily in a country where globalisation, free trade and neo-liberalism have made things far easier and better for the middle classes. Unfortunately, democracy can be dangerous and this July 2nd most likely a radical left candidate will win the elections and I may consider moving to a country where I don't see no changes at all in years... the Vatican maybe?

But would there be enough crumbling concrete bunkers, traces of gun-pits and coils of rusting barbed wire to keep him happy ? [IMG]

Tarawa? Betio? Okinawa? Kwajalein would be nice, he doesn't mind passive smoking, so what is a röntgen or two between friends?

    Martin,
