Bish, funny you should mention it but, I was at a computer games store on Thursday, and they had those games for sale. I will check back with them when they open for business after Christmas. I think they will be open on Thursday and I will see if they still have them and let you know.

DONT get Close Combat 4 it is one of the great losses of a series. Close Combat 5 recovers some of the prestiege of it's predessesors, but by far the best is Close combat 3: The russian front i have close combat 5 and it is a great game the Mod Gold Juno Silver is great as well. I Also have Close Combat 2: A Bridge too far and it is a good game with some of the features i think are extremley good but it is onl and has limited features.

Get Close Combat 3 or 5 yet other games Like Battlefield 1942 are now much better

Could you please summarize what CC5 has to offer? I absolutely love CC3 and I also have CC2. Thanks.

Heh. PzJgr, Close Combat 3 still stands as the longest-running game on my computer!

I'm not sure where my copy of 5 went, but...
It's pretty good. Part 5 improves the "theater map" aspect of part 4- in addition to the maps you fight each battle on, 4 &5 have a larger "strategic map" where you can move battlegroups around. It's sort of like in part 3- there you have maps that you just move left to right or vice versa on. I 4 and 5, you can move in all directions from each map. Gives you the opportunity to surround enemy groups, cut off roads, etc. Depending on which direction you enter a map from, that determines where you start the actual battle on said map.
Part 5 also has the force pool- you have multiple battlegroups in your command. Each of these has a force pool- as units are lost, you have limited choices from which to replace them.
These "big picture" aspects are pretty nice- they add an extra dimension not found in part 3.
One other thing- within each game you play, the maps save changes. Your troops can now dig trenches and gun pits- they automatically do so if ordered to defend or ambush at the start of the battle. Even more, terrain is now effected by the battles... if a tank drives through a hedgerow, it leaves a path...
Also, these effects remain on the map each time you use it. If you have a long-running battle on the same map, within a few days game time the map will be full of trenches and whatnot... really cool feature.
However, if I remember correctly (been a while since I played 5), there are some minor problems. Lines of Sight have some problems in 5... sometimes a unit will no get a clear line of sight to a target when it clearly should have one.

hope this provides some info! Considering that part 5 is probably realtively cheap by now, I'd say pick it up- definetely worth some time!

Thanks. I was not aware that it has been out that long. I must have spent too much time in my bubble!

Heh... broke out the Close COmbat III again last night. Here I go for another few months!

    First off, PzJgr- www.close-combat.net
If you haven't seen that site before, check it out! I just re-acquainted myself last night. Probably 200+ maps for downloading, TONS of mods, including a NEW RealRed, and so on... More stuff than you could use!!!
Also, this site has stuff for ALL the CLose Combats- 1-5.

And this brings me to another idea- anyone interested in setting up a few battles? We could set up a time to meet in the MSN gaming zone, or I could figure out how to skip that and host games myself... connect through IP or something. And since Close Combat is NOT turn-based, games would probably only take 30 minutes or an hour. Not too much time commitment.
Anyone looking to get a good trouncing?! ;)

I love the Close Combat series. Personally I think that CC2 was best due to that one had so much control over the battle, in example the surrender options, supply percentage and above all- the films shown each day! Another great thing is that it's so easy to edit the team files- how about a two man sniperteam or a five man mg42 team? I don't think that there's anything wrong with CC4 or 5, one just needs to get the right mods and patches. Currently I'm waiting for the CC3 A Bridge Too Far mod, Dreaded 88 is making a new mod. I'd be more than happy to combat anyone of you in CC3 or CC5. :D

    regards

(Damn... you know, CCIII was the FIRST pc game I EVER bought- and I still play it consistently!!! Talk about an impressive game series... geez!)

Hmmm... Charlie, I'd say II and III are definetely close. I tend to like III more- probably because fo my personal focus on the eastern front. But II is easily next in line...
IV and V for some reason didn't impress me too much. Not sure exactly why... 4 had "force pool" issues with little or no player choice, and 5 had some serious LOS problems.
A "Bridge too far" mod for CCIII? Heh... so Dreaded88 is basically modding CCIII into a version of CCII?! I'm slightly confused... but then again I've seen his stuff in the past, and I'm sure it will be impressive.
At the moment, from close-combat.net, I downloaded the PJ2 mod and am starting to check that out.
But I just broke the game out again last night, so I'll need a few days to get new maps and play new mods, etc.

Bish- "updates" is an understatement! I nearly fell off my seat when I saw the close-combat.net site (how did I not find this site before???)!
Even with my DSL connect, I doubt I'll be able to check out all the maps and mods for weeks! They have TONS of stuff!

I'm going to figure out a bit more about playing online (what's needed, connections, etc.) but as soon as I get that info I'd love to play a few battles...

We could potentially even get some little WW2forums campaign going...

CC III, man what a game, still play it once in awhile over the net, had the odd weekend over the computer with my Bro-in-law with cable connect ordering in food all weekend....got good value for that purchase I tell you. The mods are great, there was/is an active community of map makers, and once I get settled in the new home I am planning on getting back in the saddle for some more games...all 4 years after I bought it!

Best hours used to cost ratio of any game I ever bought...I gotta be at pennies per hour I'm sure. Fun, tense and easy to play!
