To whom? To Bush? Because he cares so much about us. To Tehran? And say what? 'Please?' Seriously, what do you expect us to do?
I have to fully agree with Erich on two more of his postings here. 1) If the u.n = Useless Nations) is allowed to take charge, those British Sailors and Marines are as good as already be-headed. F(*&^%$#%@ usless organization if ever there were one! >:-(( 2) I also agree with Erich in hopes that the British will again rely on "The Seahawks" again! Captain Geoffrey Thorpe must be spinning in his grave! Seriously though, I wish The Seahawks did exist.
What don't you get? Sure, we send in the navy, but a navy alone will not win. They will start attacking our land forces which we have rather stupidly committed to helping you guys. The RN is nothing compared to what it once was and is already busy supporting other operations.
just been chatting with some good boyz I have known for many years. Stefan do not despair you have more in hand through your lovely country than you know. who says you need an army or even a fanciful navy. Believe it or not your guys are already in Iran along with us anyway and have been there even before the unified efforts in Babylon with the stretched saddam. obviously diplomacy will and never will work but it will be tried to the dog lies dead. your country has outside resources beyond us. chin up
Whatever we do militarily we need an army to back up, we currently can not afford a war with Iran, end of.
It's worth noting that the Iranian nuclear program is getting closer to finishing their weapons and when they finally do complete these we all are all going to be in a situation we will regret getting into. The time to act on Iran is now. I'm surprised at this point that Germany and France (not so much France) aren't backing Great Britain right now. Especially Germany. I'm sure the Bundeswehr and Luftwaffe are itching for some action after all this peace time.
and isn't it interesting that Persia has only 1 working oil refinery, soon to be none if they do not obey the forseable ultimatum
Im interested as to how the people on here know that the Iranian nuclear weapons are nearing completion... Some of you must be privvy to info from very high levels. Please share such a source. Im interested to know any facts regarding actual weapons grade material and a reliable delivery system, plus also an estimation of possible size of warhead, how many warheads and possible targets. I would also like to know what these secret resources are that the British Army has. Certainly not any i know of. Sadly the info I have from contacts in both Afganistan and Iraq do not paint such a rosy picture of the state of the British military. Neither does a friend in the MOD. Unfortunately I cant share what they have said as it was in confidence but I hope you are right Erich, it would be nice to know there is something available to counter such actions. Personally I would be very worried by the prospect of a entering a war with a nation who is willing to fight and has the means to do so, far more than the decaying Iraqi military machine that we faced. To be honest, Im beginning to wonder if we may be biting off more than we can chew and Im sure of that in relation to the current state of the British military. All I want to see is the safe return of all servicemen and women from active duty. Sadly I think many more will pay the ultimate sacrifice for an ill-planned occupation and poorly executed post-invasion plan. To attack Iran while Iraq erupts into civil war would be suicide and a very dangerous situation for the Middle East.
Got to say I agree Vince, I tend to keep my eye on the state of affairs in the military and frankly things don't look good. Keep in mind that currently there are insufficient troops around to conduct the larger training operations, budget cuts have led to cuts in TA training, things haven't been this bad in a while. I don't know how many times I have to say this, Britain cannot afford a war with Iran. We have neither the manpower nore the resources. At best we could deploy a couple of squadrons of SF (hell, we probably have already), of course we have agents etc over there too. Unfortunately they are little use when we can't back them up in more convetional means. Would be nice to know what this high level info about secret armies etc that everyone else seems privvy to except those of us who are over here in the UK. That said, the Iranians have been very clever about the female sailor, there is a fantastic editorial in todays Times if anyone is interested.
Let them also fear us..... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/...WAVCBQUIV0?xml=/opinion/2007/03/31/dl3101.xml
I was reading the comments by the readers in the article Liberator posted and was surprised how polarized the comments were. Seems like society has changed in Britain. It would be an interesting study to see what values were different in the early 80's when the Falkland war started. I can't remember if there was opposition the the war then or not. I was also wondering if the sailors had any training on how to act if captured ? You would think so but who knows these days. It is really sad to see the British sailors being used as pawns by old people on both sides to try and have a bit more power and ego.
The sailors recieve minimal training in what to do when captured, the Marines get rather more including a few scenarios etc. This however is fundamentally different from the Falklands, if we were not already fighting two other wars then we'd have been in like Flynn. Unfortunately supporting our 'friends' has left us unable to look after our own. I don't think anyone except the total loonies are against doing something about the situation, it is a sple practical point concerning the resources available to us.
"It would be an interesting study to see what values were different in the early 80's when the Falkland war started" There is a major difference between these two events. The Falklands was an invasion of our territory. There was no ambiguity about the situation. Sadly the 'wars' we find ourselves in today lack such clear-cut definition and Britains increasingly non-racist/ethnically mixed society and culture have all played their part. Britain was a completely different place 25 years ago as were most nations. I would still like to see some evidence of the Iranian Nukes if anyone has it. Judging by the comments some do. What also worries me is the way in which Iran is just dismissed as a capable enemy. There seems to be a complete underestimation of them from all levels, you only have to read the comments on this forum to see that. Never a good way to start a war.
The Iranian hostage affair has nothing in common with the Falklands - a closer parallel could be drawn with the HMS Amethyst/Yangtze incident.
Ironically, there was strong political opposition to the Falklands war at the time - from the Labour Party. So things have, indeed - changed.
