Saw this description on a kit list taken on a demolition raid....anyone got a picture of one of these? I'm led to believe it is a radio....is this right?
There was certainly a Wireless Set No 9, and it was in service in WW2, although it was obsolescent by 1943. However it seems a bit big to be taken on a raid - details are at http://home.wxs.nl/~meuls003/wireless/wireless.html which says: --- Wireless Set No. 9 was a mobile transmitter/receiver developed in 1939. Use: medium range communication for AFV and Divisional Signals, vehicle station in truck and ground station. Frequency range 1.875-5MHz. MO/crystal control. RF output 5W/10W. R/T, MCW, CW. Range up to 35 miles. First really successful tank set. There was also a Canadian version of this set. --- The page also gives a link to a photo of the set at http://home.wxs.nl/~meuls003/wireless/ws09b.jpg Although "Set No 9" makes sense (even if it does refer to a radio that seems too large), the "1/2 lb" in conjunction with it does not. Is it a set that weighs 9.5 pounds, or a No 9 set that weighs 0.5 pound, or something completely different? Any chance of a scan of the page you are reading from? Forrest
Thanks for the info but the kit list just states 'Sets 9 - 1/2 lb.' A scan won't gain us anything regretfully.....I thought it was a radio as 6 were spread amongst the 30 men on the particular raid.....perhaps it's some sort of demolition kit? Are there any sappers out there?????
Just been on that site....can't be one of those....they would never have been able to carry them given the amount of other kit they had.....!!!!
