Hello gentlemen, I'm interested in buying the following books about the Sturmgeschutze, and I'm hoping that some of you gentlemen own/read them and want to share their opninons about them. -Sturmgeschutze. Entwicklung und Fertigung der sPak. Walter J. Spielberger, Motorbuch Verlag 2006, 254p. -Sturmgeschutze-die Panzer der Infanterie. Die dramatische Geschichte einer Waffengattung 1939-1945. Franz Kurowski/Gottfried Tornau, Flechsig New Ed. 2006, 384p. Is this the german language original version of Sturmgeschuetze Vor! Assault Guns to the Front!, by Franz Kurowski, Fedorowicz, 2000 ? -The Combat History of Sturmgeschutz-Brigade 276 Heinz Fleischer, Fedorowicz 2000, 306p. Regards, I-16 Rata
Just recieved Spielberger's 'Sturmgeschutz & it's Variants'. Looks as excellent, well illustrated and near completist on the technical development of the Stug as the other books in the series. Pleasingly it also has sections on the manufacturers & support vehicles (schleppers, recovery, Famos etc.). Not properly read it yet but based on his other work and a day or so flicking through I can recommend it fairly easily. Cheers, Adam.
well you have succeeded probably witht he most tech book on the Sturmgeschütze. for ops and crew/kills the Kuowsi book in German or English is the book to have loaded with accounts as well as very brief bios on each of the Stug units used by the Wehrmacht forces, some inclusion of W-SS but very very brief as this is about the Herr/Luftwaffe Stug Abteilungs and Brigaden. Stug 276 is good, the pics are dark if you can find them : Knight gunner the bio of RK winner Alfred Regeniter has a little different light with his service in # 276, both in German and English Stug-Abt./Brigaden 210 in Deutsch, much too brief, softback but large format, few pics. 7,000km in a Sturmgeschütz by RK winner Heinrich Engel, large format, soft bound 138 pages, his bio and service with Kameraden in Stug-Abt. 259. Photos, many out of focus and dark..typical JJF quality, good book there are other ABt./Brigaden histories in Deutsch but you have to hunt for them.......... also the squadron-signal soft bound but all pics nothing else, the Waffen Review is pretty much the same but in German E
I also have this one Adam and agree with your assessment. Ah the almighty StuG, just call me pzjgr! Salute.
Sounds like one to put on my wish list. I have Actung Panzer No.5 .....Sturmgeschutz III/ Stug.IV and Sturmgeschuz III & IV......from New Vanguard Both of these have good pictures and diagrams.
Hello gentlemen, Thank you all for your information, I really appreciate it. I've ordered "Sturmgeschutze. Entwicklung und Fertigung der sPak" in a new (revised) german-language edition, by Walter J. Spielberger ( Motorbuchverlag ). Recently I bought "Sturmgeschutze-Die Panzer der Infanterie", a reworked german equivalent of Sturmgeschutze Vor!, by Franz Kurowski and Gottfried Tornau. It's a nice book but I think it's only sketchy on the Westfront and Italy 1944-45. Regards, I-16 Rata
well when you consider that the bulk of the Stug Abt. and Brigades were on the Ost front plugging holes continually in the Wehrmachts lines then of course. there is also a fine web-site dedicated to die-Sturmartillere in German....... I've sent the web-master several things in the course of last year, but no responses given in return.
Does anyone know of a reliable source to purchace this book? I have tried Amazon, Bookfinder and had the lady at the local Barnes/Noble do a search. To no avail. TIA.
try John Fedorowicz piblishing on the net. I have purchased from him in the past, a vast array of armor titles as this is his specialty, also the translating of many from German to English also if looking for more individual histories I would go to sturmartilliere.de
Will do, Erich. Thanks. I was doing searches for Franz Kurowski. An aside note, I found a Tollehaus books bookmarker and tried them. I think you posted their link here many moons ago. The website says they're for sale.
If you paste the title into Abebooks there's lots on there, starting at c.$21 (none in the US, but that's not so big a deal these days): AbeBooks: New & Used Books, Textbooks, Rare & Out of Print Books Not sure if this link to changeable search content will work but here's the list I got: AbeBooks: Search Results - "Sturmgeschutze-Die Panzer der Infanterie", Sturmgeschutze-Die Panzer der Infanterie Cheers, Adam.
yes Framer Tollehaus is long gone, been a buyer for a couple of years and then all of sudden sickness, maybe worse and the site was off the web.
Hello gentlemen, I bought this book through Amazon.de, for 15,- Euro. Just checked and it's still available. Good Luck ! Regards, I-16 Rata
It's a long time since this thread first appeared, but I was pleased to find at last a mint condition copy of Kurowski's 'Sturmgeschutze Vor!' in a London secondhand bookshop this week. Although I'm not usually a Kurowski fan, it's obvious that a lot of hard work and research has gone into the book, with a very good selection of photos and many personal accounts woven into the unit histories. Quite a sumptuous JJF publication too - superb quality. A nice one for the shelf, and I'm looking forward to reading it through......
A few more StuG books have passed under the bridge since this thread started, but I'm still going to stand by the Spielberger as the best I've read. I've got the Kurowski, but no matter how solid it may almost appear, I can never quite get past the fact Kurowski had a hand, and he's... well, he's Kurowski. Different territory really though I suppose. The Panzer Tracts on StuGs are worth a shufti too, for bald detail, but seeing the crazy price some of those pamphlets are currently moving for, I think I'd stick with Spielberger. Suspect some Panzer Tracts are well overdue a reprint.
I know what you mean - I usually make a point of avoiding his books. Having started to tread it, though, this seems a different effort to other books of his ( the 'hero-worship' seems to be toned down ). Obviously it was originally published in German much earlier and from the tone of the introduction, appears to have been produced for the Gemeinschaft des Sturmartillerie ( veterans' association ) and has been pieced together from many interviews. As such. it'll probably remain unique. I'm finding the unit histories quite absorbing ( but it does help to have a vague idea of the locations/importance of Eastern Front locations ). As a techinical treatise on the StuG - it's a dud. But to find out how they were used - it's very good. I'm happy with this ( and '7,000km..' ) and Spielberger is now on my target list !
