Britain capitalized on one of the lessons learned from Vietnam, namely do not extend to the enemy a sanctuary that they can retreat to with impunity, such as was done early on with Laos and Cambodia. The Gen Belgrano may have been over 200 miles away and going this way or that, but still she was relatively in a war zone.

Right...No controversy, war is war, people die and you fight to win. Same as Iraq. Always typical anti war leftist ranting. People need to remember that.

On the Falklands, although Harrier made a good show, the war lent good argument for England to have a big deck CVN.

    just saw this thread.....
i actually picked up a series that was released in the late 80s. It's a 13 week edition, covering all aspects of the war, including uniforms, weapons, medals and battles in which soldiers were awarded VCs.

I have not heard of it being sold elsewhere, and i paid the Australian equivalent of about 3 cents for it! It is in mint condition, and one of my favourite items for research!!!!

Hey Panzerknacker, was it this you bought?:

Published as a part work, I bought the whole thing at the time as a war-obsessed kid, it is still surprisingly good.

Having just read Paul's post above for the first time I'd like to add another 'hear hear'. I've never understood a single moment of the bleating about the Belgrano, and have been most puzzled that the bulk of that bleating seems generated by our own press.
Did anyone see the programme where Carol Thatcher met Belgrano widow's and mothers? Personally I'd have walked away but it was kind of magnificent the way she kept repeating "but It was a war".
Quite a bit of her mother in her...

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Looking at this thread reminded me what I thought of at the onset of the Falklands War.
To my eventual embarassment, (I was a kid then) I had insisted that Argentina would win that war citing that the UK would be on the end of a very long supply line while Argentina had the advantage of operating close to its bases and sources of supply. I also mistakenly thought that the Skyhawk would have smashed Harriers easily. I also believed that the Argentinians would've used their carrier more agressively. Boy, was I wrong.
After that, I collected all the news clippings I could find about that war to learn where I went wrong.

Bloody hell if they'd had a President like that in 1982 instead of Galtieri we might have let them win !!!!!

If they had a democratic government like they have at the moment instead of a military dictatorship, our government would have probably given them the Islands, despite what the Falklanders wanted.

Does anyone know why air pilgrimages from Argentine families are not allowed and that they must use a boat to go there? is this a matter of time or is this a permanent restraint?

As far as I knew families were allowed to visit since 1991 and the flying ban was lifted in 2001. Having trouble finding much more specific. It looks like "awaiting authorisation" is the key phrase rather than any outright ban.

    This is an interesting page:
    Falkland Islands Government
Particularly the 'international relations' section, and a reference to Argentinian families withdrawing due to 'political implications' here.

More sabre rattling from an Argentinian government attempting to distract it's population from a fairly grim home economic situation I fear. Almost no states or international organisations support the Argentinian claims over the Islanders self-determination rights. Presumably the Falklands oil might be a part of the resurgence of the issue, as prices rise it must be becoming a more and more valuable/viable asset.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Those people that think of surrendering the islands to the British are considered traitors in our country.

Before this thread gets out of hand (as Falklands threads tend to do) I am telling you all that this thread has a short leash.
