Since I live in Belgium, I'd like to know if there are any good museums - about WW2 - with planes, tanks, ...? Let's say that it must not be to far from here. Within 300 km if possible.
I think that Overloon in Holland may be just within your range ? It's well worth a visit because it is actually located on part of the battlefield and has exhibits outdoors and under cover.
I've been doing some searching and Belgium doesn't seem to have much to offer.... There are of course the excellent 'Bulge' museums but these are small and specialised. Overloon actually looks like being the closest for what you are looking for, Vlaamse. Another suggestion is to take a Eurostar weekend trip to London where you can visit the Imperial War Museum and the RAF Museum ; both of which can be easily reached from the centre by public transport.
Maybe not about WW2, but you should try a visit at the museums around Ipres. I also should visit them.
You're right, De Vlaamse - the Cloth Hall Museum in Ypres was very good, even though it's ten years since I was last there. But for WW2, it looks like the Ardennes and not too much else...
I must agree with you. I - and a friend of mine - went by bike to the Ardennes and visited a lot of the famous places of the Battle of the Bulge - tanks and museums. But I think that the museum in Bastogne could be made much different. Maybe bigger and more interesting.
The Bastogne Historical Center has had rather a chequered career of late ; it changed hands once or twice and did indeed seem rather 'tired' when I visited in September. The museum shop, too, seemed disappointing & so did the helpfulness of the staff. For me, the new museum at Poteau was more interesting.
I agree with you. It is a very interesting museum! If I have the time, I will post some pictures of our trip in the Ardennes.
Maybe visiting what remained of Liège fortresses in WWI and Eben Emaël in WWII? And of course, Waterloo!!! And of course, all the battlefields around Ypres!
The Panzermuseum in Muenster is said (by friends) to be very Kewl Check this: http://vl.musehen.de/milit/index-e.htm Cheers,
I read few years ago there is a an operational Koenigstiger tank in Namur and it is sometiems put on drive tests and display so check it out, maybe it is still there.
As far as German panzers are concerned they can be seen in museums in Munster, Koblenz and Sinzheim in Germany.
Hello, within your distance limit you have the Diekirch Historical Museum in Diekirch/Luxemburg and a very good one wich is the Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung in Koblenz/Northern Germany. If your are ready to travel a little bit, there is the Imperial War Museum in Duxford Airbase/UK where you should go when they have the Flying Legends airshow sometimes around june or july (starting from Brussels,it is possible to make the round trip in one day). Have a nice day.
About 2 years ago I had a link to a site that presented very many european museums. I think it was mainly about WW2. Can anyone help me to find that site again? Best regards / Mats
visit ypres, there are intact trench systems there. And I bet there are many monuments scattered around Belgium!
