Why did Rommel betray Hitler??

    WHy did he?? I mean.... He should just follow orderes and then, in Nuremberg, he would be sent free.

    Maybe because he realized he was going to burn in *#$% if he didn't? Aside from theological musings, Rommel, like many career officers in the Heer realized that Hitler was leading them into a path that was doomed. His participation in a move to short circuit this destruction is a sign of intelligence rather than the ignorance shown by the hard core Nazi party members and SS.

    Rommel was loved by Hitler, but the love only went one way. He saw Hitler as a fool, and as a lowly corporal he once was. Not too much love there eh?

    Churchill gave the best toast to the passing of Rommel in the Parliment buildings. He praised him as a real hero, and one hell of a good enemy.

    Just two things:

    1) Rommel DID admire Hitler, at least, until 1942.
    2) He was NOT involved in the conspiracy. He was only suspicious of it, though innocent.

    I saw a documentary on Rommel and they said that he betrayed Hitler because he knew that he would be executed if captured so he wanted to make things 'right'.

    because he at last realized what an evil bastard Hitler was, though it took him far too long to come to terms with the fact he could no longer condone that evil.

    Rommel was never actually involved with plans to kill Hitler, however he did recognize Hitler for the megalomaniac psycho he was. Hitler's paranoia linked him with the conspiracy.

    Kenneth Macksey, in his superb little bio of Rommel, gave the Good Book the final word, which I thought (and still think) was appropriate: "Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help" (Psalm 146:3).
