Well there were many of these but who stands out for you? For me Major General Roberts GOC 11th Armoured Division stands out as a brilliant divisional commander. he grasped the use of armour superbly and his division was probably the best the british had in NW Europe.
i'd have to say Gen Lucien Truscott... he was the commander of the 3rd US INF.. when he took over as their commander he decided they were too soft so he instituted RANGER physical conditioning.. he basically turned the 3rd infantry into a ranger division.. they went on to receive more congressional medals of honor than any other.. in battle he was utterly dependable and a superb tactician.. how can you not respect a guy who says to his troops on the eve of their first battle "you are going to meet the boche soon.. carve your name in his goddamn face! dismissed." crude perhaps but with an eloquence all its own
Now this is the thread to mention Erwin Rommel. As commander of the 7th Panzer division in France he was hardly challenged. I have to think about lieutenant general Werner Sanne too, commander of the 100th Jäger division at Stalingrad.
While Rommel was in command for the Panzer 7th, he was the best, but then it was leutenant general Haruyoshi Hyakutake, who fought Vandergriesf in Guadalcanal...
My favorite is Sepp Dietrich of course! He may not have been the best but his men loved him and would have and did anything for him.
German: Rommel. Alternate: Generalmajor Alexander Edler von Daniels CO of the 376th Inf Div. American: Patton. Alternate: Omar Bradley. British: Wolf (Not WW2) Alternate: Burgoyne. Japanese: I would have to agree with Hyakutake on Guadalcanal. Alternate: Sendai, also on Guadalcanal. Russian: Zhukov as Div CO. Alternate: Chuikov.
My favorite com div is Erich von Manstein 56th Panzer Corps. He was too fast in his offences. His dismise in '44 helped Russia.
