Amazing. A communist country right off our coast, Communist China controlling both ends of the Panama Canal and we feel threatened by some 3rd world country half way around the world. Some priorities.

Perhaps Fidel's been takin a dirt nap for a while now. 18 months is a long time not to see him.
Maybe it's the same as someone I know who whenever he says he's thinking about doing/getting something, that means he already did and is just looking for confirmation as to whether it's cool/smart/PC (or whatever) before admitting it.
Perhaps the retirement announcement is a post-dated obituary. Testing the water?
    Smells fishy......we shall see.

He was very popular with his people for many years and the economy was good with the Russians helping out. When the Russians left and the economy went bad then he was less popular. However before Castro, Cuba was run by mobsters and puppet dictators.

Castro pulled a slick trick when he emptied out his prisons and mental hospitals and sent them on a boat lift to the USA. Many of you may be too young to recall that embarassing moment for the USA.

It sure was,and a whole lot of Americans fell for it. Remember the Gonzales kid? (I think that was his name) The front page 'news' pics of a swat team barging in with weapons drawn and the kid crying. A lot of bleeding hearts poured forth. Also, it sure doesn't seem that long ago. Gettin old I guess.

the fall of castro wolud be a disaster for many people of my (mysterious) country.

cuba is today one of the preferred destinations for sexual turism. i've never been there but i was told by friends that everywhere u can find cheap prostitutes (not awesome but decent ones). the phenomenon is widespread, many survive with sexual turism.

some of the men that go there often come back home with a young wife. it's easy coz the girls there are ready to accept everything to escape.

oh i forgot, cuba is popular for female sexual turism too!! (big bamboo power!)

anyway, i'm just reporting this. i don't want to judge anybody.

I don't know if you have ever seen these people lifing under the highways in and around Miami, I have seen them. This was not a pretty site, and as for the americans "falling" for this, not really, oh i'm sure some did, but the Florida govt stuck them in camps until they could be cleared. Many wound up in our prisons once there identity was established.
Anway i remember driving by an encampment that smelled worse than driving by a garbage dump on hot summers day! And so many tents!
