    I'll take it by default.
A Fletcher, who sank a Japanese destroyer while preparing to abandon ship.

Google makes this too easy even if there were a lot of Fletchers .... Chevalier (DD-451) sinking the Yugumo, is that right?

My apologies. I stumbled on this thread in the top ten and hadn't read the quiz rules. Feel free to disregard my quizmaster intrusion.

I'm glad we're disregarding it, because I can't tell one Leander from another.

Come on you should at least be able to distinguish between the one and two funnel ones:D.

I just stumbled on a 1943 naval almanac and was very temped by a Manchiukuo monitor but then decided this was better

The Soviets called it Tsel, I believe.

Just for the record it was the Ajax, but I didn't realise that all the Leander class were so similar (still don't! lol) or I would have chosen something more unique. I think I may have to gain more kowledge before I can participate in this quiz, as I feel slightly out of my depth.

If I was to venture a guess this is Ajax about 1935. You forgot to change the name of your photo.

I will persist with my Tsel theory and say it is Hessen in German service. There's a photo of Tsel next to Adm Makarov (ex-Nurnberg) in Raising the Red Banner, page 193.

Apparently the system ate my first reply ...

Must admit I didn't know of her red fleet career  but Hessen is probaby more correct as the photo is from a 1943 book so obviously before her transfer in 1946.

Ther is a good pic of her in her original form at

    Germany - Predreadnoughts - TŘÍDA BRAUNSCHWEIG - Warships 1900-1950

    Over to you ...

It tells you about the orientation of my recent work that I remembered Tsel but had to look up Hessen.
Ooh snap, now I have to come up with something. All right. Well, this looks British, doesn't it?

I'm going to go with HMCS Kootenay, formerly the British destroyer HMS Decoy.

Alas, Bb, that is not the correct answer. Have at it again.

Drat. I'm going to hope you said it looks British because it isn't, stick with the same class and say HMCS margaree?
