Amazon.com: A Life In Secrets: Vera Atkins and the Missing Agents of WWII: Sarah Helm: Books In "A Life in Secrets," Sarah Helm tells the riveting story of the courageous men and women of the British SOE, the Special Operations Executive, who, during World War II, were parachuted into France, and thence into the arms of the Gestapo. The author also delves into the life of the woman who sent them there, the enigmatic Vera Atkins, who, as a perfect spy, covered her traces so expertly--and so completely--that the biographer has been left with more questions than answers. I read this about 2 years ago...from memory an interesting story but a hard read if you know what I mean....she certainly was concerned about the missing agents and did her best to find out what happened to them which comes across in the book. IMHO a book to be read but not bought....unless you have a real interest in SOE....
I think this is a remarkable book that I will revisit often. The authors ability to track down witnesses of Ms. Atkins secret trip early in the war is amazing to say the least. The book leaves the reader with an appreciation for how distorted and blurry history can become. It also left me somewhat frustrated at the reality of how one person can decide whether or not the world should know the "truth" of significant historical events such as the "Prosper deal" and the role of Dericourt.
